Re: 8rt engine id

The first thin 3/8" belts were 1950 for Ford and Mercury cars. Trucks kept the 5/8" wide belts.

High mounted partial flow oil filters were pretty standard post war to end of production.

Re: 40 gas tank?

I prefer SS for a fuel tank, and had Rock Valley custom build the tanks in my '32 and '40. Not cheap, but NO issues.

Re: Optima 6V Battery Question

The one problem with Amazon in their packaging. The last (and only) 6v Optima I bought from them came very LOOSELY boxed, and amazingly survived the trip without busting through the box or being...

Re: Timing a 1951 Ford Flathead

Disconnect and plug the vacuum line to the distributor when setting initial timing. I would make sure the point dwell is OK before making any timing changes. Target dwell is 27 degrees.

Re: Points Gap on chevy distributor

The target dwell for an 8BA is 27 degrees, while the Chevy dwell is 30. Set the dwell first before adjusting the initial timing, as dwell/point gap directly affects timing.

Re: Flathead pre-oiler - good, bad and the ugly?

Ziggster,
You would be better starting off with a clean pressure vessel, like an inexpensive common garden sprayer, vs one containing "crud/rust". Using a filter is a good, but a standard full flow...

Re: Alternator Wiring-2nd Question

The DA plug designed for regular production 10/12SI GM alternators has two numbered wires:

#1- Goes to the ignition switch (on) and should have a diode/and or idiot light (a common #194...

Re: Ol' Ron

Very sad news. I still enjoy reading his book, and run an L-100 in one of my flatheads because of his many writings on the subject. Would have enjoyed meeting him, and will miss his valuable...

Re: Additional Ground Strap Location

IMO, the most important ground is from battery to the engine, usually at the bell housing, or lower front of a flathead block. I would not use one of the stater bolts because of it's small size and...

Re: 36 Ford Transmission to Mercury EAC V8

You'll need the 3" '48-'52 truck or '49-'50 Mercury 1/2 bell housing, along with necessary clutch and flywheel mods, changes or additions.
The 1/2 ton truck 3-speeds are the same as pass car iirc. ...

Re: Throwout bearing

A couple friends and I bought early '50s NOS Ford throw-out bearings many years ago, and found the original grease had deteriorated so badly the bearings would need to be disassembled, cleaned,...

Re: The dreaded arm rest thread.. 42 Mercury

I would try some of his suppliers, before giving up. The rests are very nice and worth looking for, imo.

Re: The dreaded arm rest thread.. 42 Mercury

You might want to look at the re-pop '32-'48 arm rests from Bob Drake. Well made, with the OE brackets designed to capture the diagonal door brace.

These are a bit more involved when building...

Re: Did a FH V8 sit level in the frame, fore and aft?

Yes, vintage torque tube Ford V8s sat level in the chassis. When Ford cars switched to open drive lines in '49, the engines/transmissions sat lower in the rear to properly line up with the new...

Re: engine ventilation

3WHank,
The 59A blocks utilize the same crankcase ventilation that started in '35. The later 8BA system was an upgrade because of engine design changes.
Below are pictures of early and late...

I'm uncomfortable leaving maintainers connected full time on cold storage vehicles/machines in the winter. I've learned over the years that occasionally checking battery voltages only requires about...

Re: Pedal Seals 1946

I would advise not using the thick stock bumper/seals if you have changed the OE 1 1/16" master cylinder to a smaller bore (like a Mustang 1" during a brake upgrade) because longer pedal travel will...

Re: Engie oil

IMO, you should NOT run a heavier weight oil than your engine really needs, and this requires an accurate oil pressure gauge to know for sure. Both my flatheads, one stock I've owned for 24+ years...

Re: 8ba road draft tubes

What about the flatheads before the road draft tube was incorporated?[/QUOTE]

The first "road draft" system used on flathead V8s was introduced in 1935, exiting through a vent on the right front...
