My 48has the same problem. I put new rubber seals or[ what ever there called.] When I did the restoration . The seals were very hard . liked to never get them installed. I guess they will just stay...

Your right . I just had to go there. I would check the big wire to the starter . make sure its tight and not corroded. Feel for something hot I don't know how that old floor starter is connected ....

All electrical equipment runs on smoke. when all the smoke comes out of them they don't work anymore. That's what the big boys told me.

Ross . From my point I see nothing wrong with your post. ford 38 must have got up on the wrong side of the bed. I do that sometimes.

If they don't stay broke it's hard to fix um. I would run a jumper to the coil and drive it, that would take a lot of things out the question about ignition.

Just set the timing where it will run. Take it out warm it up. mash the gas at about 2000 rpm. keep advancing the timing until it pings a little ,then back it off till it stops pining. then your on...
