Menace, I struggled with a similar question a week or so ago regarding my car. My dad made a few alterations to the car (including a 49AB). My question was whether or not to work my way back to original or keep it the way my dad made the car back in the 40's. The resounding response I got was to keep the car the way my dad set it up, honor his memory and enjoy the car the way he would want me to do. I could spend a lot of money (and that's fine) to change this car back into something that might be in contention at some of these shows but if I do, it forever erases what my dad did to the car 65 years ago. I value the long family history of the car more than adding a plaque or trophy to the wall. Ask yourself what grandpa would want you to do with it and give him the respect to do that. I finished my car and was able to send him some pictures shortly before he died and I know he was happy about it. He had full blown Alzheimer's and when shown the pictures of the car when I was done he said "that's my car". I would suggest doing whatever you want to do to your car and honor grandpa while you're doing that.

I would leave them on. It looks like back in the day. They will be good the rest of your life and then some.

Nothing really wrong with those homemade water tubes.
For those who have a '37-'48 engine w/stock heads, in a '35-'36 passenger car with stock radiator, the Gates 21253 one piece hose (available at NAPA) works nicely and looks stock. In some cases a rubber sleeve, also available at NAPA, is required at the head outlet connection. For those who are installing a '37-'48 engine in a '34 and earlier passenger car, your engine to radiator spacing is greater than '35-'36, so the Gates 21253 hose will not work. In your case the Drake kit being offered now is a good selection. I don't really care for the "one fits all" flex hose that's mentioned above because it tends to put too much force on the radiator inlet connection tubes which can cause them to crack at the tank connection. Of course this is all JMO.

For those of you that prefer the chrome pipes, back in the early eighties I was building a flathead powered 32 roadster, had those krinkle hoses on till one day I was at the scrap yard and say a pile of stainless steel swimming pool ladders just laying there begging to be re purposed. I cut out the section I needed, polished the pipe and had the cheapest, coolest set of water pipes in town! Rich
