These "what did you do today... " discussions are popular on other forums and provide a place to share something you did that may not warrant its own new topic. So feel free to share any little flathead V8 projects you worked on, found, started, finished or saw. We'll see where this goes. I'll start.
The fog light mounts on my '35 deluxe fordor were a bit cobbled together. I found a junk light at a flea market that had the clamp mount parts needed. So I was finally able to get them properly mounted :-) Last edited by ndnchf; 04-02-2024 at 10:56 AM. |

Good thread Steve
I am Slowly putting this one together to go into a "restoration" project in Holland via a restoration shop in Poland. Started to assemble this past weekend and working on it night by night. What about a 1941 4cyl....is that allowed??? |

Attemped to start the 40 for pre Easter drive to the Kids House, Battery was low. Got it running, then had an ignition issue. Fixed the problem. Filled the tank with Premium. Put 150 miles on the car.
40 Really likes Premium Fuel. Most of the Flat Head Comments were not repeatable, |

I finally have my work space set up in my new shop here in Perry Mo. and my first project was to dismantle and rewire a very cool old art deco turn signal switch for 41 pickup. It has a teardrop shaped body made of painted pot metal . Me being me likes things that shine so I stripped and polished it to look like chrome. Tim

I drive a V8 almost daily. In the spring, summer and fall a V8 is my daily driver. Helped a guy track down a '34 cigar lighter also.

Made a beer run in my 40 convertible. It was 84 degrees here in central Alabama today. Been working on V12 Lincoln distributor conversion to V8. Also in the process of building two flatheads. One is a C69 block bored to 3 3/8 with 4 1/8 crankshaft with Kiwi L-100 cam for my 40 coupe. The other is an 8BA bored to 3 5/16 with Kiwi L-100 cam for a customer.

I finished refurbishing another original April 1936 and later generator cutout. The points were checked for alignment, dressed and gap adjusted. Air gap checked and closure voltage adjusted to 6.5 volts. Painted to resemble the original finish, then assembled with new insulators and hardware.

Been messing with the copper coolant pipes for my rear mounted rad on my speedster project for the last month and a half. Trying to make a mount/support using the fuel pump/breather tube for the copper pipes coming off of the heads.

I went to the Charlotte Auto Fair last week. I came home with a pile of generator cores for rebuilding. So I've been going through and sorting them out.

In response to a Want Ad I spent at least 2 hours last night taking pictures of two disassembled 32 column "drops", then move the pictures to my computer to reorient them, then move the pictures to an email, then write an email with an accurate description of each drop. Well what else am I doing from 11 PM to 1 AM?

Got the interior out and most of the floor cleaned up on the 47 Coupe. Just going to wire brush it, replace body seam caulking, and POR it.
Replacing body mounts at the same time. |

I got the '34 out of the barn yesterday after it's winter rest. It didn't want to wake up at first and was a bit cranky, LOL. A bit of gas down the carb and she perked right up! There was still a bit of residual salt on our roads here so I didn't go for a drive. I changed the oil and it rained quite a bit last night so maybe I'll put a few miles on it today.

I was working on a local club member's generator. It had a threaded on, fan mount pulley. These are often tight and a bear to remove. Being a fan mount pulley, I was able to unscrew it using an old fan as a wrench with the armature in a padded vise and a little heat.

I started my 33 coupe for the first time in a few years and identified a problem with the brakes. Today I fitted a new master cylinder and I just put an order into Rockauto for new wheel cylinders and kits.

This morning, at my V8 Club's monthly meeting, I owned up to the dreadful act of doing the responsible thing with my most beloved possession. I'm not getting any younger, and two days ago, I was quite suddenly confronted with an offer I couldn't refuse.
My 1938 Ford Convertible Coupe is now the garage mate with a 1939 Lincoln Zephyr Coupe. As you can see in the photo, the proud new owner of my pride and joy has brazenly stolen the smile right off my face.

Yesterday I helped a friend fire up a 49 Mercury truck that has sat since the 70s. Pulled the starter as it wasn't working. Reinstalled, couldn't get spark but turned over nicely. Plug wires were original and most were seized into the distributor cap. My buddy spent a good half hour digging them out. We made "new" wires from a chevy van he had parked for years. Wouldn't even sputter on 6 volts, jumped/boosted it with 12 and the engine fired immediately!! One mistake we made, was the carb was very gunked up and we didn't notice that it was stuck on full throttle. Wow did that engine rev high!! The inside of the carb is also messed up but we did manage to get it to idle for a bit and it sounded real nice, likely running on all 8.
He was very impressed and is going to rebuild the carb so we can play with it some more later. He is a chevy guy and had a hard time with the concept of the cylinder numbering as he has only worked on chevy V8s. I'm amazed myself how that engine fired up and survived that high RPM startup lol. Usually I like to let them idle a lot before revving an old engine up. Durable engines for sure. |

Stripped the 39 LZ rear end I bought yesterday...looks good; the bits I want....I run a Columbia in my V8, which is lowered. This tends to permit lubricant to run forward down the torque tube. As the Zephyr diff is hypoid, my thoughts are to run that banjo and the gearing, coupled to my existing Columbia and Ford housings, which will set the torque tube at a better angle. Looks like all I'll need to modify is the driveshaft and torque tube. And drill a coupla holes in each bell to suit the banjo. The LZ gearing is 4.44:1, currently my Columbia is running 4.11:1, and I'm running LZ gears in the trans. Gotta try these things. What a fantastic hobby, I never tire of playing old Fords!

Picked up the 99 relieved block from the machinist that I got him to hone to suit the new steel pistons I supplied. Unfortunately, the crankshaft I'd asked him to grind was cracked and bent, told him to put it in his scrap metal bin... now the hunt is on for a crankshaft! Oh, the fun of it, playing with all this old stuff, isn't it a great disease?
Incidentally, this is supposed to be a 'budget' build, just to use up some of the accumulated 'junk' [ask my wife] in my shed.

Put a new heavy duty battery isolator in the 34, it already had one ,but it was a plastic one and inside the engine bay, so I had to lift the bonnet(hood) every time)\So now its mounted under the drivers seat out of sight and easy to work.
Packed some of my stuff in the back as Im away in it on Anzac Day. I will be taking my drone ,so will get some nice pics along the way. Lawrie |

Insulated the fuel line from the pump to the carb on my '35 V8. Also plan to place the Phenolic carb spacer between intake manifold and carb for further cooling. I was on a drive last week and came upon road construction... sat waiting for 10 minutes on the 'go ahead signal' from the flag man when the engine stumbled to a stop. Vapor lock. The backup electric pump solved the issue quickly by refilling the line, but I hope to reduce the need for that in the future with these upgrades,

I finished restoration of a 1931 model A generator this morning. So today I'm starting the next one; a 1942 - 1948 2-brush generator. I'm trying to get ready for the Luray pre-war swap meet in a couple weeks. Always a good time 😀

Went to Fitchburg Early V8 show. First time in 4 years.Great first show of the season. Am always on the lookout for 39 Ford parts for my long dormant dump truck. Gotta make some progress this year. Don't need a grill but if I did there was a really nice one that appeared as new for $600. Lots better and less expensive that what I've seen lately on Ebay. At least 3 35 Ford grills. All nice. Didn't check the prices. Seems like parts price trends are up but these regional shows always yield some surprises. Didn't see Joe's Antique Auto trailer. Maybe they were at Epping? Had a list of small parts that I needed. Oh well, Uxbridge is only 50 miles from home. Will be a nice day destination. Oh one other thing, lots of empty swap spaces. Is that a trend?

Brian and GB, Yes I bought it. Sitting for at least 40 years. All original but very well used. Half of the rear fenders are missing, etc. It is a vey early truck with the B serial number in the 8,000s. I went to dig it out of the mud yesterday to prepare it to be removed from the lean to. I figured the brakes would be frozen, the steering locked, and the transmission a solid chunk of rusty gears. Happily the brake shoes had been removed, the trans shifted, the steering column was not locked, and 3 of the tires on the model A wheels actually held air. It acts like it wants to be liberated from its captivity. Will pick it up in a week or two. Fun Fun Fun!
who bets it will run? |

Changed the oil & filter, installed new plugs, cut excess park brake cable( had to make my own rear cable set), cleaned off the auto trans id plate so I can order a new pan gasket. Started the engine and let it warm up. Everything done in the yard, up on Jack stands. Got my exercise, but my wife says I don't walk enough... I'll be 80 this fall. Ha Ha!! JPL

This is one of the best small swap meets on the east coast. So who is going? I'll have my table set up at Wick's spot along the treeline. Stop by and say high. Steve |

Last week I helped swap the banjo section, ring & pinion, on a 40 pickup axle. The pins holding the coupler to the driveshaft and pinion had snapped due to worn out splines (the pins were taking the driving load and failed). We replaced the 4.11 with worn out splines for 3.78 with nice splines, good teeth, and nice bearings.

I just posted a new video about installing and seating generator brushes. The example is for a model A generator, but the same process applies to flathead V8s. Some of you may find it helpful. There are many other generator related videos on my youtube channel as well.

My ol' flathead is just running so well that all I do is drive it!
That reminds me-it's oil change time again.

I just got back from Florida and found the battery in my '51 was dead (the battery tender somehow got disconnected when I let the hood down last fall). I hooked up an old style charger (the maintainer wouldn't start) and am hoping it'll come back. With the price of Optima's these day, I hope it's not kaput.

I just finished rebuilding this really nice, original paint 1940 generator. I'll be bringing it and other rebuilt generators and cutouts to the Richmond Virginia AACA meet this Saturday.

On Saturday took the sedan out at 11AM this is 9:00PM. Seventeen miles out fourteen on the way home when it stopped going forward, lost power but didn't stop running??? I took the fuel pump and carb apart, didn't fix anything but did manage to lose the (97) float valve. So ended up on a piggyback to get home. More fun today, found a float valve, but still not running, now I think it's the ballast resistor. Leave that for more fun tomorrow.
I should add, that car has never been outside overnight since 1955, It spent 39 years in a barn from 55 to 94 when I bought it and it's been garaged since then. Last edited by BoxCar Tom; 06-09-2024 at 09:06 PM. |

Refurbishing another batch of original Ford cutouts.
Here are the various cutouts used in the Ford flathead V8 era. At top is one variation of the rare two-rate regulator which was optional on factory radio equipped cars starting around 1934. Then left to right are the open feet style which is a carryover from the model A, used Dec 1930 - June 1934. Then the "A" stamped cutout used July 1934 - March 1936. Then the "B" stamped cutout used April 1936 - until end of 3 brush generator production. Any you see marked BATT and ARM are later service replacements. |

I've been busy lately. Pulled the rear end a few weeks ago replaced the torque tube center bearing with one of Skip's, new front and rear grease seals. I also pulled the Columbia right side axle housing and had the rear bearing race replaced. Broke down a week ago due to a faulty rotor and now rewiring my ignition cables but ran out yesterday :-( The solid core kit came with 20' but I needed 23'
sanded down a few paint scrapes and will apply touch-up POR15 today. Glenn

52 Ford Crestline Victoria. Engine rebuild sidelined for 15 months while I has rotator Cuff tendon reattachment surgery and rehab. 71 years old. Picking up where you left off is a bit scary. The engine was assembled minus pan and intake. Did not want to button up until I was sure I had not forgotten anything. Every part I took off the engine got into its own baggy then I had wire wheels and cleaned all the hardware. Couldn't find some of the parts. Mind you they are not spread out all over the workbench and tables, but grouped in boxes. I got all the remaining "Baggies" (many already used in reassembly). I save those used, labeled baggies in a box with the labels from new parts used already. Then I put all the rest in a long box in order. At least I have put eyes on all the hardware I have. Couldn't find the starter to engine bracket. It was in the box with the new starter. Couldn't find the oil pump hold down bolt and screen to pump bolts. They were in the new oil pump box. When you are working on the engine each day, you remember that stuff. I've got the pump in and the hold down bolt wired. Couldn't find the instructions for installing the pan seals and I sort of squashed the large diameter rope seal when I installed the pan with a couple bolts to make my run stand. About ready to install the pan and hope for no leaks. During the heat spell we had here in CA, my garage, partially underground, is at 70 deg when it's 100 outside. A joy to be in the garage.

Not today but yesterday had the 52 Merc out for a photo and video session by the blooming canola fields that are everywhere here. Should be some video of it coming up on my yt channel shortly.
With temps getting well up into the 80s I probably won't be going too far from home with it.

Yesterday put a new Clutch and Pressure Plate in my 35 Ford Pickup. Also a new Master Cylinder. Then change the oil and filled the Steering Box up. Today I was going to check the Air Pressure of the Tires but the Air Compressor locked up and burnt of the motor and ruin the Electric Box. So went to NAPA and bought a 7 1/2 Compressor and they will deliver it tomorrow. I change the Electric Box today and ready for tomorrow I think.

Its too bad this discussion just can't seem to keep traction. I think its fun to see what everyone is working on 😕
Well today I finished restoring another 1933 - 1936 style flathead V8 generator. I'll be taking this and others to the AACA Eastern meet in Hampton Virginia in a few weeks. |

Finally able to get back on the 41 GP. It stinks when you have to rely on others for help, but getting the engine back in without tearing up half the Jeep by myself wasn't in the cards.....SO my brother came over and lent a helping hand. One of the pressure plate bolts snapped so I had to do some time with my mill and get that problem solved BUT once I got that drilled and ez-out'ed and in about 20 mins had the block in and bolted up.....NOW its on me to Get-er' Done!!! Lots of details to tend to on final assembly

Changed the oil on my '35 Fordor (1939 24 stud motor). It sure was nice having a proper wrench for that big oil drain plug! Found the wrench at the Charlotte auto fair last April.

More maintenance on the '35 Fordor this morning. Pull the plugs (Autolite 216s) for inspection - all looked good tan to light brown, gap at .025". Checked head nut torque at 45 ft lbs and cleaned the air filter copper mesh. A good morning's work.

I welcomed home a new member of the family. 1942 Cabover Firetruck, was advertised in last month's V8 Times. Was transported from Louisville Kentucky to my home in Washington. It will fit in nicely with my other Cabovers. 1947 rollback, 1942 fuel tanker, 1938 Marmon Harrington tow truck and 1940 101" Stake bed.

Well Lawrie, guess I have no one else to blame but myself, I drive it like I stole it most of the time and its not uncommon for me to pull 100kph out of second and I think I may of had one or two "hard changes" shall we say.... This might be my last time rebuilding these toploaders I might have to install something else.. As my friend Phil says you know you need a Hemi in it! I did try call you a little while ago, everything going ok?

Been working on the '35 Ford's heater, getting ready for cooler weather. Today was a good day to test it out, so I went for a drive around the area. Happy to say it works great - my feet are about medium-well done. Just had to stop for some glamour shots 😉

I finally installed my rebuilt 1935 engine in my 1935 1-1/2 ton truck frame. The cab should be back from the painters soon, so I wanted to get this in before the sheet metal starts arriving. Can't believe it's been 25 years since I got this truck. At least now I'm on the way to getting it done and back on the road.
Now it's on to the exhaust, electrical and and so many other details, but for now I'll sit back, relax and enjoy a big step forward.

I restore a lot of Ford generators; model T, A and flathead V8. I'm not a big fan of 12 volt conversions. For most applications a properly restored 6 volt electrical system will work just fine. But I get occasional inquiries about converting a generator to 12 volts. I finally decided to build one and finished it this morning.
I'll have it and other restored generators and refurbished original cutouts at the Hampton Virginia AACA show this Friday and Saturday. If you are there, stop by my table and say hi 😀 |

I finally got a good 1932-1939 truck steering wheel out of the mold. It's been a long process but finally a good wheel. Now to remove the flashing and do some polishing, then perhaps make a few more.

Took a lovely 80 mile drive 2 days ago in my '36 pickup, in West Marin County (just north of the Golden Gate Bridge), along California Route 1 + Ridgecrest Blvd on Mt Tamalpais overlooking the town of Bolinas-basically my backyard. Perfect weather, minimal traffic, pure enjoyment!

I just got back from a 105 mile trip to a country festival with about a dozen other local antique and classic cars. Had a great time and Miss Daisy didn't miss a beat. A great day.

I finally finished a 20-year long project to create an original exhaust pipe, muffler and tail pipe for my truck as it was built in 1935. The original exhaust had two parts, a Muffler Inlet Pipe and Muffler (Part No. 51-5230) and a 94” long Tail Pipe (Part No. 51-5256-B). I was able to get an NOS Service Replacement Muffler Inlet Pipe (Part No. 51-5245) which comes without a muffler and an NOS truck Service Replacement Muffler (Part No. 48-5230-C). I welded these two parts together to create a one-piece unit. Unfortunately the service replacement muffler has a universal fit exit pipe which is only 2 ˝” long and the wrong diameter. I had a transition piece machined from solid stock to match the original muffler outlet pipe length and configuration (2” diameter transitioning to 1 ˝” diameter and 5 Ľ” long).
I was able to find an NOS truck tail pipe but it was for the shorter 131 ˝” wheelbase truck. This required splicing in a 28” length of 1 ˝”).060” wall thickness tubing. Finally I have the correct two parts (along with the cross-over pipe (Part No. 51-5267)) to install an as-built exhaust system along with the three special truck exhaust system to frame clamps. This was all only possible because I was able to get a copy of the exhaust system Engineering Drawings from the Ford archives many years ago. It took forever as a lot of other projects got in the way but at least this part of the restoration journey is done. Maybe no one will ever notice this detail, but it makes me happy.

Got this thing 98% ready to roll after 2 years of working on it. I still need to sort an issue with the carb/fuel pump/vacuum leak, and get the new tires installed. I want to get to at least one cruise/show before the season is over here in Ohio.

Got this well on its way to be shipped to Norway. Just about ready for it to be run. Just waiting on the correct intake manifold bolts to get here and I can bolt up the generator from you, Steve, and it is pretty much good to go!!!!

Spent the day removing speedometer and gage assy to free up stuck speedometer and calibrate speedometer which was 20 percent off high. All of this was greatly assisted by members of Ford Barn.

Today I had my first drive of the 39 Deluxe coupe that I've been working on for about the last 4 months. My step daughter wanted me to overhaul the brakes on her Mazda, this meant I needed to clear room to get it on my hoist; the coupe has been occupying that location all this time, so it was actually a blessing in disguise to have to move it. Still a ton of work to do on the old coupe, including fitting a Columbia. The initial run in procedure for a Columbia requires it to be run on jackstands, in overdrive for ten minutes to circulate the oil, then to refill to the level. I am reluctant to run the fresh engine in this manner until it's logged a few run in miles, so finally being able to drive it is a great feeling! I'll be doing a few more after I've retorqued heads etc.

I just finished restoring this generator. At first glance it looks like a stock 6 volt generator. But in fact it is a full 12 volt, negative ground conversion using a 12 volt armature and new 12 volt field coils. It will be going to Hershey in a couple weeks along with other restored generators and refurbished original cutouts.

I've not done a thing to the car but run gas through the carburetor. I've put almost 200 miles on the car in the last month and a half.
Things need to be done, but I don't like the prospect that the car would or could be laid up for any length of time. I do have a fully rebuilt OD trans from Van Pelt to install. That's one of the things that needs to be done, along with resealing the engine, rebuild the carb and front end. For now, it's the sound of the flathead working through the streets around my house.

Thanks Tim :-)
I finished up this one today, kind of a 6 volt hybrid. Its a mix of parts that has a fan mount pulley, using the extra large 1937-1938 style bearing fork mount to carry the fan load, mated to a 1941and later 2-brush body. It is similar to the '39 standard/pickup generator. It was running on the test bench today, pushing over 30 amps. This will be on my table at Hershey, along with other restired generators. |

I don't use a generator, just an alternator, no stock fuel pump? intank electric and no mechanical fam, also electric 8BA water pump, yes the work quite well on the 59 blocks just plug the hole make the adapter for the early motor mount, another trick is to use the passenger side water pump pulley on the driver side and run one narrow belt and a chevy harmonic pulley. All this makes the engine more reliable and quitter

I adjusted my shocks yesterday. I had a record of my settings but was also surprised to find loose shock arms to shock shaft. Took it out this morning on mostly rough roads, and the ride was Much better!

I have been working on cleaning the rust and grease off the rear axle and driveshaft for my 1937. What a cloud of rust dust, thank goodness for a good face mask. I had the rear radius rods sand blasted and I welded up the holes that were from the hydraulic brake lines and emergency brake cables installation, then painted them. Also, disassembling a pair of 1937 brakes so that I can clean up and paint the backing plates.

Installed dynamat inside the cab. Also attached the windshield opening drain tubes and ran the rubber tubing down inside the cab all the way to the rear door sill. I didn't want any water dripping inside the cab or inside the door sills.

I finished one last generator before Hershey. This is a custom built 12 volt, negative ground, fork mount, 2-brush generator with the fan mount pulley. a bit of a Unicorn! This was built using parts from 3 different generators. It includes a NOS Ford 12 volt armature, NOS brush plate, new 12 volt field coils, brushes, new brush springs and new sealed bearings. This should work on a 1933-1947 Ford flathead V8.
I'll have this on my table at Hershey, stop by and say hi. South chocolate field CJ 71-73, near light pole 61. Steve Blancard |

Finally got back to working on my car. It has a later Mallory dual point distributor (with a RED cap; I noticed the black plastic paint I used on it is starting to flake in one corner so it has to go). I have an SBC Mallory "flattop" (converted by "Charlie NY") ready to go in. Today, I made the plug wires (Packard 440 and Rajah terminals), and it's goin' in this weekend.

Just plain WOW!, Tim. Ever since I first became aware of this event I have wanted to go to see it in person. But to actually compete. Heck Yah! Guess I will live vicariously through your efforts, but one of these days I hope to be on the sidelines rooting for you, or better yet.... On your pit crew! Would LOVE to see a thread on your car, it's preperation and the trip.

Next year, I'll change the tires to something other than the Firestone pie crusts. No traction! Prep was easy. Had to make a roll bar and install a five point harness. I was able to use the existing seat belt mounting points for the harness and used the sub rails for the roll bar install. It was so much fun, I want to build a dedicated race car with adjustable seating so anyone could jump in and drive. I had the best luck starting out in 2nd and just keeping it planked all the the way through the finish line. Clean up wasn't that bad either. Vacuumed, air gunned, washed down with Salts Off anti-salt wash and then air gunned it again. |

Fixed a vacuum leak causing idle issues. Someone maniaced a 1/8-27 npt female port on my Offy intake & I couldn’t adjust idle over 400rpm even bottoming the idle screw adjuster. I cleaned the hole then ran a tap in it to clean maniaced threads & put 1/8 npt male fitting w 1/4 “ port tube. Also used clear rtv to seal top threads that were just maniaced ti much to repair. Rtv curing now & will check after.

Started the 38 conv, moved to work garage, will fill with gas tomorrow, change oil tomorrow, using castrol 20w-5o, clean under side, gonna have to get a new optima battery, and try to put it in the ford script case, then store it under cover till spring thaw, been a fun summer, with several best-of-shows...be safe this winter

Today I made my first post to the forum since joining a month ago. I joined pretty much as soon as I started trying to bring a ’38 V8-60 back to life. My user name says Lisas38 since this is really my wife’s car. Her great aunt bought it new in Nashville, TN. It’s been passed down a time or two. It was running about 15 years ago when we put in storage in AL. It has come home to Illinois and needs a lot of TLC. I’ve already made good use of the knowledge stored in this forum and expect to come here often. I have done a restoration once before. Lisa’s MGB that she has had since high school. I’ve started into the Ford with the fuel and cooling systems and then on to brakes and steering. Most future posts/replies will end up in an applicable thread unless I can’t find one.
We’re looking forward to a little V8 rumble one day.

Dan,
I'm probably less than 20 miles from you. We have some good resources in the area and about 50 local members in our Early Ford V-8 Club regional group. Even some V-8-60 people. Ken

Today Dec 22, 2024 I started at 9:30PM installing the deck lid on my 32 3W coupe. It hasn't had anything in that hole since 1978. I had no choice, I had to get it out of the dining room because we'er having house/dinner guests for the holidays. One hour and one chip later I was done and I also installed the deck lid latch and handle. Those two parts have been absent since I bought the car in 1965. I'm on a roll !!!
It's a nos deck lid i bought in the mid 80's so it's kinda monumental to finally install it. Cost, $500.00. those were the days. Last edited by BoxCar Tom; 12-23-2024 at 08:39 AM. |

Replaced "iffy" rubber tubing that connects electric fuel pump, put in inline fuel filter while I was at it.

Began to remove my old trusty engine in the 35 so I can install yet another. The 35 is the test mule for almost every every engine I build. Easier by far to work on the 35 than the 39 coupe. The engine going into the 35 is the 255 cu in 21 stud I built up a few years ago that was not a good engine, all sorts of dramas with the scat stroker crank etc. This is the next rendition of that engine, I invested a lot of money into building it, and was very disappointed with the outcome. I posted numerous grumbles on here about it at the time, so a while back I rebuilt it with nos low compression cast iron heads and a stock distributor. The first time round it always detonated, it had 165 lbs compression and a crab distributor. I feel it had too much compression/too much advance. So, because I'm such a masochist, I'll go through the whole rigmarole yet again. And then, no doubt again when I refit old trusty once I again get disillusioned with the 255....

So what is that photo of Brian, the one going in or the one coming out?
Ah ha! don't need to answer, no cast iron heads so I assume it is the one coming out. Is that a Lucas distributor? Merry Xmas and a happy new year. Geoff |

Very observant of you Geoff, yes, it's the engine coming out, and yes. that's a Lucas 4 lobe distributor...Lenny Jones always raved about them, just one of the many modifications from stock in/on that engine....you've seen it in action at Meremere nostalgia drags years ago when I ran 17 seconds and lost because I broke out of my nominated time....Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you too, hopefully we'll have a catchup sometime during the new year, cheers, BB
ps, did you notice I pinched my wifes black stockings? I use them as an additional filtration device on the stock aircleaners.

Yes I remember that weekend, seeing a full bodied, just a bit away from stock, 221 cubic inch, 1935 ford, showing its stuff was really something. I remember another Ford that showed itself well was Malcolm Blakely RIP in his 1951 Ford Sedan that managed 18.1 seconds from a basically stock (carbs and heads) engine. I remember Model A's cranking out 22 and 24 second times that weekend. Everyone was proud of what they achieved and so they should have been. I fear that that weekend was the last of those times. None I have attended since have been the same. Geoff |

yeah, I've never been back; drag racing sucks!! That race where I broke out, I was up against my mates 39 Mercury [I built his engine]. He had like a 4 second lead on me, I caught up to him and actually braked in order I could give him the finger as we crossed the line together, and he won!! Now, dirt track is where that old 35 excels, much more fun and a bit of skill is involved too, bit harder than driving a straight line...
and no, my wife doesn't wear black stockings, I get them off her!

Received V8 times today, lots of reading there. But adjusting and bleeding brakes took precedence. Got a bit of pedal, started her up and ran it in high gear for a few minutes (on jack stands) and will adjust rears some more.

Put seats back in my '41, good thing I had wife's help with the back of the rear seat, it is a bugger to reinstall. Enlisted neighbor to help put front seat back in. He is a strong dude but said "this thing is heavy!" Yup!
Then went on a 5 mile ride. Steers nice, rode great, better than I expected. Almost like a new car! But the brakes need more adjusting, maybe bleeding, especially since brake light switch is stuck, NAPA says they have one. Overall I am super happy with the car. TomC750

Finished adjusting brakes, work well now. Car drives like a new one save for a bit low on power, but rides as well as our Bronco Sport. Suspect timing may be retarded. Will send dist and coil to Charlie. Drained trans and rear. Will refill tomorrow, yes, GL4 for trans, GL5 for rear.

Filled trans and rear. Used a furnace oil burner pump I rigged up years ago to do such a job. A bit slow pumping gear oil, especially the 140 for the transmission. Put the oil jug in front of a heater which helped quite a bit.

I just finished restoring another '34 - '37 flathead V8 generator. These are more difficult than most to restore, but they are very nice generators.
Next up is a '53 two-brush, a '34 three-brush and a really rare '32 three-brush post mount V8 generator. |

38 Ford Flathead "old school hot rod"..working on issues, and need help. The car arrived with negative ground. I want to change it back to positive, 6V ground (reverse the battery to being correct for the car when produced. It starts, runs, on the negative ground, but I don't think the seller had the generator, which has the attached fan on it..a 59A in the car ..that it was polarized to negative. I know the POS goes to a good ground. The NEG goes to the solenoid, etc..I think the coil should be a non-resister coil, as the resistor is under the dash. So I wire the negative wire to the PLUS on the coil? negative on down to the distributor and points? That's what I'm working on today. I have studied everything I can find on it, the Youtube etc, but nobody really shows what goes "Where"..except for the diagrams for a 38 Ford. Of course the generator is for the 59 A.. and when I run it to dial in the 97 carbs, when I shut her down, the battery shows a discharge, telling me I don't think it is functioning and wrongly polarized...can't wrap my mind around it and help would greatly>> be appreciated.

OldFred, your coil is wrong way around, because your car is pos ground, the wire from coil to distributor [which then goes to ground] should be from the + side of coil. The points in the cutout in the regulator could possibly be [welded] or otherwise stuck together. Or you've got a short somewhere. Welcome to the best flathead site on the planet!

I built a oddball, one-off 12v generator for an 8BA engine going in an early 30s car with fan mount pulley. A lot of different year parts were used, and a lot of work. Not somthing I intend to do again. But it works well.

Love post 241 as I’m about to have the generator on the 37 Ford rebuilt & possibly a new voltage regulator. Found out the hard way the battery didn’t seem to be charging.
For the 1953 Merc, I managed to get new tires installed today. Car rides beautifully and “feels” like it has power steering (it doesn’t). One of the many steps of getting her ready for the CNM in June ! |

I just got home from Oregon where I was working on my 41 pu. I learned the hard way (AKA things you'll never forget) to always check you valve to head clearance. The heads worked fine on a original 8BA but the new stainless valves have thicker/taller head then the originals from ford. Yes the heads were milled sometime in the past and I did the tinfoil balls on the pistons but not the valves. Needles to say , I didn't get it runnig this trip, maybe next . Tim

Not a V8 ,but model A.
Straightened and repaired the bent front radius rod from my model A, man that is made from tough stuff, also the top left hand perch mount was worn miles out of round, so made a new one and cut the old one off and welded the new one in place. Also trued up the old perch bolts and cleaned up the threads . Lawrie |

Finally got the radiator grille shell on my truck. Had to fight with the stainless steel trim as it had it's own mind made up of a shape different than what I needed, but lots of hand tweaking finally got it nailed down. Then was able to get the NOS radiator grill emblem mounted with the correct cad-plated backing plate and chromium-plated screws. The radiator ornament is re-chromium plated NOS. Nothing fits so nice as original parts!
Now onto the fender skirts and hood.

Installed the military marker lights on the front fenders of my 42 Mercury US Army staff car. Removed the fender trim piece and used the center hole so didn't have to drill. Keeping trim pieces if someone down the road wants to put this car back stock. These lights were used to allow the vehicle to be seen by other vehicles in convoy or by civilians, not to illuminate the road, those were black out lights.

I just finished building two full conversion 12v negative ground generators. A '41-'47 style and a '48-'53 style. These are hybrids using new 12v armatures and field coils, and a mix of original and '55-'64 parts. It takes some modification to bring it all together, but they work beautifully. Im trying to get ready for the upcoming Charlotte Auto Fair in a few weeks

Installed distributor rebuilt by Charlie which included a coil upgrade by Skip Haney. Performance much improved.

Removed Bubba beer can coil bracket and worm clamp and replace with F marked Ford GPW bracket I had on the shelf. Looks much better, but only one bolt hole lines up, so new correct bracket is on the list.

Over the last few days I replaced the king-pin bushings…repacked the wheel bearings and replaced the grease seals….added an updated steering kit….cleaned and adjusted the brakes….changed the oil and filter…..mounted and balanced 4 new tires….and made some doo-hickeys to make measuring the toe easier….

I finished up converting a 1933-1937 style V8 6v positive ground generstor to12v negative ground, 2-brush for use with a 1955-1964 Ford voltage regulator. I'll have this on display at the Charlotte Auto Fair 3-5 April. Red field BR 54-55.

Fabricated brackets and mounted military tail lights on my 42 Mercury staff car project. Replaced solinoid and removed radiator for cleaning and painting, all new hoses. Hub caps and trim rings removed, sand blasted and primed, ready for paint. Bumper guards removed, blasted, primed. Fan blade removed, blasted, primed and painted black. A lot of little things, but moving the project forward.

I disassembled the rear spring for my 1937. I plan to clean it up and have it powder coated. It is a nine leaf spring and if anyone has spare #3 leaf I might be interested. I had the spring repaired many years ago and the replacement leaf does not have the groove down the center to distribute the lubricant.

This month I did a complete rebuild of the front brakes with rebuilt components from White Post in Virginia. Bled and adjusted all four wheels. Rewired the electric fuel pump. Six months ago rebuilt the starter and cleaned the mating surface of the starter and the block. It starts so fast now that it barely cranks! The last thing I did was replace the motor mounts. Got 45 years out of all these parts.. not bad!

Welcome aboard Scottellen, that is a beautiful looking convertible!
It looks like the grease retainers are installed upside down on the backing plates to me. |

That is one great car! When I was a teenager, I thought '40 DeLuxes were cool. Then I grew up and developed good taste and I now believe that the '39 DeLuxe is the ultimate expression of the era of Fords.

Trying to repair a broken door handle with JBWeld. One broken piece is glued back on. Waiting until tomorrow to glue the other piece back on.
Taking odds on this breaking on the first use. Plan B is to try brazing it back together, as it appears that nobody makes a repo door handle for '36.

I repaired a similar break in a Corvette vent window handle about 20 years ago and expected it to break right away. It is still good. And no, it wasn't on the passenger side so it gets turned once in a while.
If brazing doesn't work, try something like "Muggy-Weld". I've had some successes with it, and some failures. I think it has to do with how well the alloys in the filler and base metal match. If all else fails, place a "Wanted Ad" in the "Swap Meet" section. I'll bet there are a bunch of these out there in drawers, on shelves, etc. Last edited by tubman; 03-28-2025 at 04:31 PM. Tubman, thanks for the positive result. It gives me hope. And I'll have a look at the Muggy-Weld stuff for a plan B.
I thought about posting in the swap meet area, but I need to get my post count above 10 in order to be able to post there. It's one of the reasons I posted about something minor like a door handle... just to up my post count without posting completely useless stuff.

Is there enough room to press a tight fitting sleeve over the round part? Might be do-able if you have a lathe.

Mart, that is a great idea. I don't have a lathe, but I will look around the garage to see if I can find something that will work. Do you think a spring clip (like the ones used on vacuum and fuel hoses) would work, or because they give they wouldn't be much of an improvement?

While returning home from a Netflix Movie opportunity I left Second Gear all over
La Grange road in Tinley Park. Good news is they paid well and I have a Rebuilt Transmission in the garage. Bad news is the weather is Crappy again and The installer (me) is 77 . Oh well |

Ready for radiator install. Cleaned up and painted fan blade. Now, before you get all flustered about the yellow tips, this is going on a 42 Mercury US Army Air Corps staff car. I have photo evidence that some Air Corps motor pools took the regulation about spinning props having yellow tips to the extreme. Especially on this being a one star general's car. So, I did the yellow tips for that reason.

As a follow-up to my post last week, here is the door handle fixed with JB-Weld. I put it on a back door and moved the back door one to the driver door, which is the one that had broken. So far it is holding.

The Plan: put 4 new tires on the '36
The current tires are at least 70 years old, and not to be trusted. I got a set of Coker Excelsior tires, because they were the cheapest round rubber things I could find. I watched several videos and was confident I could install the new tires myself. However, breaking the bead on the old tires turned out to be a 4 hour adventure in teeth gnashing and colorful use of the English language. That 4 hour session resulted with a single tire off the rim. I like doing as much work on the car myself as possible, but I have given in. The remaining 3 tires are going to the local shop to get them removed from the rims. I still plan on installing the new tires myself. I imagine they will be a 'bit' more flexible than the old ones. The spare is going to keep its 70 year old Firestone for now. Last edited by SixSquaredFord; 04-06-2025 at 03:06 PM. Reason: english |

I had the same challenge with 4 petrified 6 ply 16" truck tires and finally resorted to using a skillsaw. Lots of rubber smoke in the shop but got it done in about 2 hours.

I picked up an intake and some carbs and checked on my engine build.
This is my first flathead going in an AV8 '31 Tudor. The engine is a Mercury EAC. It had never been rebuilt and was rather clean. Ended up .030" over on the bore. |

It looks like everything is well in hand. I see that part of the ridge on the front face of the manifold is broken off. It is needed to keep the generator/fan assembly aligned. Once that much has been broken off, the rest goes easily. I had the same problem with a nice Navarro Universal dual that I really wanted to use. I fixed it by grinding and filing down the broken part so everything was evened out. I then cut a piece out of the proper thickness of aluminum that duplicated the missing ridge and attached it to the manifold with epoxy and some #8 or #10 (I really don't remember) socket head flathead screws into holes tapped into the manifold. It worked out great and is hardly noticeable. I'd post pictures, but I am in Florida and the manifold is in Minnesota.
May I ask what brand is that manifold? It appears to be correct for an late engine, as it has what appear to be provisions for a forward oil fill and road draft tube. |

Not so much yet today as the ground is a bit wet to take the Merc out. But ten years ago today I took it for it's first drive in almost 35 years. It was rough but running. Its been ten good years and looking forward to a few more.

I mounted 4 new tires on my rims... only took 3 hours. I used the garbage bag method, which definitely works, because I forgot to put it on once and couldn't figure out for a bit why nothing was working.
40 degree tires just aren't as cooperative as I imaging warmer ones would be. I should have brought them in the house overnight. Oh well, my wife feels I needed the workout anyway. Anyway, they are on and I'm proud of myself for not giving in and taking them to the tire shop. |

Went to a clearance auction yesterday,
Was going to bid on a supposed NOS ww2 engine, Turned out to be a dud, welded up bell housing and rusty bare block. But , there was a pile of rusty stuff that used to be a 32 phaeton, completely rusted out chassis and four pallets supposed 32 bits, but none useable I thought. it sold for $10K. a Range Rover complete minus just the radiator $40. a complete and going landcover $120 an 8ba bare block, no main caps and bores as rusty as,I was interested but it went for $30, higher than my limit of 25. But a good entertaining day out in the model A pickup. Lawrie |

Went over to Conneaut Ohio to help change carburetors on a friend's 46 Fordor. It had a poorly working 91-99 carburetor on it. I had an extra model 59 core which I convinced him to send to Charlie NY. Not saying the guy is tight but I think he still has his baptismal money. After we got it installed, he remarked it drove like a new car. His car has a Vintique wiper motor, and the pivot had come lose so I slithered under the dash and repaired that.

Have'nt started a build thread though I was kinda thinking about it ![]() The carb adaptor is available to convert the M90 blower and mount the carbs. So are sealed rear needle roller bearings ( as opposed to OEM non sealed ) to prevent them from being washed out. Ill be using either V pulleys or a 2" gilmer setup. Either will work but both have their pros and cons. If I use V pulleys, I'll run my bored SBC 6" balancer and a bolt on, triple V groove pulley, 2 belts for the blower, 1 belt for the pumps and gen/alt. Will fab a snout coupler to allow for quick and easy upper pulley changes and a bracket to mount an idler/tensioner pulley for the belts. Shoud'nt be too difficult, all part of the fun !

I got my '28 AV8 out of winter storage and ready to roll. Last time I ran it was during TROG in Oct. '24.
At TROG, I treated it like an abused dog all weekend. Many hard full throttle 2nd gear launch starts and general shenanigans on the street at night. Turned on the gas, pumped the pedal a few times and it fired right off. It's still running strong and terrorizing the neighborhood. LOL! Last edited by Tim Ayers; 04-18-2025 at 10:26 AM. |

Sad day! Drove the 37 Santback onto a transporter, going to a new home. This was best car I ever had or will have: pro-built streetrod, Motor City Flathead, Tremec T5, etc. Sold due to advancing age and losses in the stock market. But it's going to a good home, buyer has V8 Rouge class background, he will baby it. But still, a sad day for me.

Yeah, but ok, what would you be like if you didn't get up off the couch and out in the garage? Moving about is better than sitting still. Progress is progress nonetheless. Keep going.

From the last scene in the Clint Eastwood movie The Mule the song played was “Don’t let the old man in” written by the late Toby Keith. I try to live by this as my daily creed although I am only 57 and always think of my dad who unknowingly lived this way until he was 92.

Day 9
Transmission is installed. Minor stuff left. Interior stuff and wheels. Should be boiling water by this afternoon. Not to many aches while working but now I am afraid to stop. Heard a new one . "Life is like a three act play. The first two are ok. The third one not so much. |

Day 10
One month to the day. Transmission in. Car on the ground. No test ride yet. Why did the minor stuff takes two days instead of a couple of hours. Last time i did this (25 years ago) it only took two days for the whole job. Dont think because of your age that you cant do anything anymore. Took me a lot longer than i thought it wood. But as Clint Eastwood said "At This Age All I have to Do is Force myself to Do It" Well Said. |

Put a mechanical oil pressure gauge on my '41 Merc. She's one year younger than me. A little difficult, but gott'er done. And yes, not as easy as it once was.

Day 11
Took a test ride around the block. No problems. New transmission is a Lot quieter and shifts better, Some STP in the trans seems to have helped. Thank you for your Support. Roger |

Poured resin copies of the super rare 1935-1937 front tow hooks for big trucks. I borrowed an original set (first I've ever see in person) and then made a silicone mold using them as the pattern.
Just need a bit of flashing clean-up and I'll have a display set. Now I'm thinking of getting a set cast in ductile iron and maybe re-creating the special equipment front license plate holder too.

Wander out to the garage. Cleaned up the aftermath of the transmission replacement. Put all the stuff needed for a trip around the block. Same stuff is need for any trip. Regardles of the length, One mile or a 100.

I've been working on my 32 sedan body and paint for the last 6 months. Today I took it out on the road for the first time this year. It started up great! Having a priming fuel pump helps a lot. I also had to start and move my 57 Thunderbird to get the sedan out. That started well as well, so all in all a good result as I achieved what I set out to do.

Set up the new 3.54 ring and pinion in the 34.
One thing is that to get the contact patch nice it needs a .060 shim under the pinion bearing. other wise the contact is way too high, right on the top of the tooth. so ,after. a days work, I have a nice contact patch and .008 b/lash. tomorrow I will finish the assy of the rear axle and refit it, BUT , I. thought I may try with a thinner shim under the pinion ,just to see. I have all the shim and gaskets written down so I have a datum to return too. Lawrie |

I finally got around to adjusting my drag link so that my '32 pickup. steers the same amount in both directions now. Sure makes for easier maneuvering in tight spaces. So I took it for a test spin and stopped by a parts house for some items. Then filled up with non-ethanol. I sure enjoy the torque of that 276!

Do you happen to need a restored 1932 generator? I'm sure you know how rare they are - one year only. Post mount. I have many restored generators available, but only one 1932. $425 plus $29 shipping and insurance to a US address. |

That looks like a beauty, Steve but I've got a 12 volt generator on the '32. Sorry I missed you at Luray, it was certainly a good meet.

Went for a ride to test out the new transmission. (worked well) Just got far enough away, where it was too far to walk back, and the 40 died, Good fuel and battery no spark at the plugs.

Today started yesterday when I started pulling valve assemblies out of the '38 V8-60. I borrowed the long 'pickle fork' tool from my machine shop. It kept slipping and missing the grooves. I finally managed to get one of the exhaust valves out. That's when I discovered the fork opening is too big for the little 60. So I modified a flat prybar I had to have an opening that fit the removed guide. Pics below. I got the rest of the exhaust valves out pretty easily since they all moved when the spring was pulled down.
None of the intakes would move (I'm curious if there is a well known explanation.) I left them over night to soak in as much PBB as I could get to them. Today they were still stuck hard. I broke part of one of the guide grooves and realized I need a new approach. I used the clamping valve remover to lift the spring and remove the bottom stem key. Then I used a 1-1/2 inch section of 1/2 inch PVC with a lengthwise slot that fit under the valve head and rested on the guide. A couple of whacks with a dead-blow hammer and the horseshoe key was free to remove by hand. The clamp went back into service and finished pushing the guide out. This worked amazingly well.

Installed front seat belts in the '41 Merc. Nice product from Seat Belts plus. My only gripe is them using FedEx. Delivered to wrong address again! Put me a day behind.

Well, I saved my '41 Merc from a 4' Black snake intrusion. Was headed for the car. This spring I had one thread its way into the undercarriage of my side by side. I did not want for the same to happen to the Merc. Went to lunch, came back and found another, a bit smaller. My bride of nearly 62 years helped me remove both to the woods. What a partner! By the way, she loves the Merc.

my new-to-me '41 Ford Super Deluxe convertible (lachaven green) was hauled from the consigner to my storage unit today. very pleased with everything, now that i've had a good chance to take a close look at it.
such simplicity and what quality! they were built like a WWII Soviet T-34 tank! i have recently sold after owning them for four or five years, a 2007 Porsche and Aston Vantage and still own two vintage British cars: a '53 MG and '67 Jaguar Mk2, but this older ford puts them to shame as far as construction and materials quality. i'm amazed. from now on i might be an American made kind of guy, at least as far a vintage automobiles are concerned. |

I got busy in the shop today. Adjusted the brakes, checked all the fluids and greased the old gal. Aired up the tires, too. Not having a lift and getting up and down isn't as much "fun" as it used to be! Went to a local show about 30 miles away yesterday and hope to go to another nearby tomorrow.

Short Road Test to the Waters Edge Golf Course in Worth Illinois around 4 pm 5/26.
First trest of transmission and ignition repairs . Going further than I care to walk back home. Wish me luck. If it makes it 20 miles it is good for a 100 miles. |

The choke knob on my '41 Merc stuck out from the dash when pushed all the way in (choke full open). I disconnected the connection on the carb and pulled the rod out of the rubber coupling. I heated up the fitting that went in the coupling and worked the rod out. After some careful measuring I cut one inch off the rod, heated the fitting again and tapped the rod home. Another heating and swaged the fitting with a chisel. Not sure of the effectiveness of the last operation, but I could not easily separate the two.
If I had to do over I would have simply measured how proud the knob was from the dash. Duh!

Update First long(?) trip was failure. But I did make it home. Another Electrical Problem.
Let car sit for a day or so. Spent the day planning my attack. Decided to start with the easy stuff first. Has a coil adaptor so i started with the condensor first. Noticed the end was frayed so i replaced the end, Amazing fixed the issue. Made it to the Frankfort Illinois Cruise night on Monday June 2, So far so good. Happy Motoring! |

slowforty,
Depending on your route, that is between 14 and 18 miles round trip. If you can make it that far, surely the '40 can make it another 160 to Springfield! You have 19 days to work out any bugs. Ken Kn

Installed new gas pedal. But first I needed to drill mounting holes in the pedal. I was surprised they were not there. Careful measuring got me there. I also tightened up the hinge by judicious use of some tools. Thirdly I had to slightly countersink the hole the rod goes in, as no amount of force would result in getting it to enter, even with the help of silicone grease.
Now, the reason I sprung for a new pedal was that the hinge was sloppy in the old one (the new one was about the same), and it was difficult to get the rod to enter, I figured that the rubber got hard over time. Bottom line - Did not need a new one. I do seem to have a history of modifying things, from parts to vehicles, starting with my 1967 Bronco. Within two weeks I did three mods. Shift linkage, tie rod and steering column.

A few months back, I fitted a new engine [255 cu in 21 stud] into my 35. After doing a few miles, I noticed engine oil had been spraying over front of engine, collecting on the splash pan under the radiator, and starting to cover everything under the hood with a coat of oil. Figured it had to be the front seal leaking, I had rope seal fitted, so bought some one piece seals, figuring I'd fit them to this engine and subsequent engines I build. I have occasionally used the old 35, but finally, today, bit the bullet; decided to pull engine and do the job properly. Disconnected battery, removed floorboards, undid engine to gearbox bolts, removed hood, wire from oil pressure sender, undid engine radius rods, removed earth strap, removed alternator, fan, inlet manifold. drained coolant, went to remove distributor [three bolt] ;hello, only two bolts holding it on...bottom most bolt completely missing! Duh!! there's the oil leak dummy!!!
So, that's what I did today!! Now to put it all back together; good thing I know this vehicle intimately, I'll put it back with a Lucas 4 lobe distributor this time. Just for something different.

Put my pen down and released the second set of additional materials for my book. I found some door panel information to document some Ford-approved field modifications, a special equipment grease gun, re-wrote the section on cylinder heads, added a section on newly discovered from shock absorbers, and some other details. Twelve pages this time. The learning continues. Link to the free PDF:

Upchuck I mean update.
More ignition issues. Changed plugs made the gap .35 instead .25. Slight improvement but not better. Put in new Packard 440 wires. Had a backfire out the exhaust on Right side. Works better if you put right wire in correct terminal. Starts and idles ok but pops back thru Carb. Put in new inner caps when I did wires and plugs. Scratched head for a while. Cleaned one of the old inner caps and replaced one of the new inner caps on the left side. evidently the new cap was defective. Anyway starts and runs well. Lesson learned only change one item at a time. Easier to find out if you still have a problem. At this age (77) Trying to figure out issues is a challange as all the people that I knew that knew anything have gone to the Ford Barn in the Sky or moved away. Anyway so much for adventures in Old Ford Maintainance. |

The paint on my '35 is over 25 years old. While the car has been well kept, the paint is showing its age. I decided to try the clay bar treatment to remove surface contaminents and restore the smooth surface. Its a lot of work, so I did it over a 2 day period. After the clay bar, it got a coat of Griot's Best of Show wax. Its not a miracle cure for old paint, but it did make a noticable improvement to the paint and apoearance.

Still buying NOS 1942-48 Ford parts if they are priced within reason. Fan bearing assembly I got this week. Had one new in the box from my Ford dealership in Iowa that I used on the 42 coupe. |

Went for a short ride Wednesday. Came home with a bad vibration in the drive line. Transmission seems to be ok. maybe the bearing in the torque tube, I never ends,
I love old cars. Will investigate after the Holiday. |

my recently purchased '41 had just had a new starter installed before i had it hauled away to my storage area. and it has never turned the motor over very fast, and when warm, not at all. it sounded, to all the world, like it was binding to me.
the old one was in the trunk and so i tested it. it seemed to work, so i installed it yesterday (what a job!) and it's turning over like a champ now! i'm guessing that the new one had been shimmed improperly...grrrr! this is the very, very short story, BTW.

I was out for a bike ride with my wife and she had a flat. She started walking, pushing her bike while I cycled back home, fired up the 41 pickup and went to pick her up. She commented on how useful it is to have an old pickup.

IMG_8710.jpg IMG_8711.jpg IMG_8712.jpg IMG_8713.jpg. Hello. We Fabricated a FH run Stand . As “Olde Ron “ would say , we don’t put brand new FH motor builds on a run stand. We put them in a hunk of metal with 4 tires, and run th Som Bt CH . So we honor his knowledge, as this is not a “ Break In “ situation. |

Went and looked a one of the nicest original 34 BB trucks that I have ever seen. Showing 18,000+ miles. Not perfect but has original paint and most of the pin stripe. Drivers door is super good.

I think it's great that it appears to be a V-8 version and not a 4-cylinder model.
Hope your friend will share some of the story on Fordbarn on what he does to the truck.

Yes its a v-8 model. The oval badges on the hood that have 'Ford' in them are missing, possibly stolen. Also a deluxe model. It has a chrome front bumper and a chrome hood hinge. He plans to get it running as is and use it as a mobile display for his hit and miss engines.

Washed the old girl this afternoon, scrubbed the whitewalls and made the sign “For Sale”. Driving it to the Country Club tomorrow for a golf event, hopefully find someone younger that wants to take care of her for the next few years. She still has the original carpets in the rear seat area!

Some how five of the six bolts on the clam shell covering the u joint disappeared.
Dont ask me how. As all the bolts were tight after the recent transmission replacement. And they were the same fasteners that were on the car for the last few years. So new fasteners with NYlock Nuts and Loc Tite. Problem solved. Everything works well (So Far). On to the next adventure. Happy Motoring! |

I started the 35 Pickup today Its been two years since it has started. I move it to the garage at the house. I need to change the oil, grease it, new tires and put twin exhaust on it. Also clean it up. Its a bit dusty from sitting. Once I get the 35 ready to drive then to get the 40 ready to sell. At my age its time to let go of my Junkers so someone else can enjoy them I guess. That hard to do.

Q: is this a '37?
i think the humpback trunk to be the nicest body style, but i don't recognize the front. and to further flummox me, i don't think i have ever seen a grille which wraps under like this one. thanks, sid Last edited by s.e.charles; 08-01-2025 at 07:56 PM. Reason: typo |

i did not know that "touring" was an early option or even term used to identify.
i can't understand (from YT presenters' examples such as Paul Shinn) how the early Model A cars were pattered from the factory. perhaps a jolt to the motoring public as the country emerged from the Depression? apparently those color splashes continued into the decade. |

I went to an “Antique Tractor and Engine Show” at the Raitt Homestead Farm Museum in Eliot Maine last weekend. I brought my “59” stationary engine that powered a water pump at the S.D. Warren Papermill in Westbrook Maine. I think it was the only V8 there on Friday. A lot of meticulously restored tractors, one-lunger and hit & miss engines.Real works of art for sure. Met a bunch of nice people. One guy lives about twenty minutes from, claims he has 30-40 single cylinder and hit-miss engines. Because of his age, he wants to start selling a few……soooo……..I think I got room for one………Mark

Removed the Broken hood release hand on my 40 Deluxe. Good thing the Son was there to help. Can no longer bend over backwards and reach over my head.(77)
Tried to fit the Repop handle but it looks nice but does not fit correctly. A little work with the die grinder should work. Quit after a hour or so too hot. 89 degrees. Will try tomorrow if it aint to hot. Update later. |

1940 hood handle.
This was a repoop.(And I do mean poop) Required much modification. Would not fit in the stock hood ornament. Required modification Bracket inside required modification. Thanks to my son for all the help. (He can stand in positions for a Long Time that I can only dream about.) He did need some help from me as he did not understand 85 year old technology. Why didnt they use Phillips Screws? They were not invented yet. The piece works well after all the work. Happy Motoring! |

I noticed a problem with the head gasket on my 32 sedan. I got the gasket changed and had it back running today. The gasket that failed was a "best" brand. It is the second one that has failed. I'll not use them again.

Swapped the #50 main jets in my '41 Merc for #52's. Runs stronger and without the lean surging, which wasn't that bad, but my perfectionism dictated I get it as good as I can.

My brother and I finished replacing the gas tank in dad's 46 sedan yesterday. It took longer than it should, but reproduction parts required modification. The only parts that bolted straight on were the fasteners from Third Gen Auto.
Brake job on the car is next. |

Changed oil in the '41 Merc. Used Valvoline VR1 20-50 this time. This oil along with several others was highly recommended by Blackstone labs, they do very scientific research and testing of oils. I swear the car has more power than it did. I also blocked the radiator to get the temp up to about 200* while at a fast idle, the oil pressure held up much better than previously.

While traveling down Rt .30, in my 40, towards the Auburn,Cord,Duesenberg Fest in Auburn Indiana, Around 50 mph, there was a knocking sound. A few seconds later the knocking sound stopped, as a connecting rod exited the block.
Another adventure with Old Cars. If it was not for the bad luck ,I would have no luck at all, |

Thanks to the guys in the steering box lube thread i decided to check the grease in the '37 box. it took a small amount of grease. as kube had said he drilled and tapped the fill plug although sounds like a great and handy idea i choose to just remove the plug and fill box with my needle attatchment for grease gun that i bought for a cv joint i believe for one of my other vehicles some years ago. also i could use a new fill plug,is getting worse for the wear. Went on a great outing with my friend's T. The highlight was a visit to a private collection which has all deluxe convertibles and roadster for all the flatheads and the cars are pristine!
And for the go fast guys :-) Last edited by glennpm; 09-18-2025 at 06:12 AM. |

Went to see and listen to the dealer exchanged ‘38 engine for our ‘35 that Ed Smith rebuilt. Apparently the dealer found an oddball 21-stud ‘38 when the uncle had them do the swap. No idea when.

All 1937 and many 1938 Ford 85 hp engines were this style 21 stud motor, nothing odd about them. Swapping in a 37-38 style 21 stud motor into a 32-36 Ford has been common since Ford first made the parts so their dealers could do so. |

Rebuilt fuel pump on the '41 Merc. I was surprised that the diaphragm looked perfect, I expected it to have pin holes, as the output was week as evidenced by the car running out of gas on a steep hill. I then found the plate that holds the valves in place had a stripped screw, resulting in the valve not being held down securely. Tapped hole deeper and used longer screw. Used new diaphragm, valves, springs etc. No more problem on grades.

I just found out (a little late!) that my car made the Early Ford V8 club calendar for October 2025. I don't really use paper calendars anymore, so didn't know until a friend mentioned seeing a car like mine on the calendar. I had forgotten about submitting the photo last year.

Yesterday I dry-fit the timing cover to see how the crab distributor would line up. I went in thinking this 59 block would have a long-snout camshaft and that I’d need a spacer for the distributor, but as soon as it seated I found it’s actually running a short-snout cam and different from what I expected.
This engine was rebuilt in the late ’70s and has been sitting ever since. It replaced a cracked ’34 block, and I’m starting to see the builder reused a lot of early parts, it also has 29A heads. I’m assuming he used the shorter cam too.

Here is the finished product. Macs oak bed kit that I darkened the wood with a propane torch, lightly brushed with brass wire brush and treated with several coats of Teak oil.

I went for an early morning ride in the '34 and, while passing a grape vinyard I started hearing a noise from, (what I thought), was the rear of the car. I was sure it was a wheel bearing so I pulled over and stopped the car. Thankfully, the noise continued and I looked over at the vinyard and saw a small wind turbine spinning around and making a loud 'clack, clack, clack sound. Was I relieved!

I took the '51 for the first drive this year around the lot at my shop. No problem with the car, but I can't say so much for myself. When I came back from Florida this spring, I found that my arthritis had moved into my shoulders big time and made driving a car with power steering a problem, much less one without. After a few months of physical therapy, I've gotten most of the function of my right arm back, but not so much the left. Anyway, I found that as long as I keep the car moving, I can handle it quite easily. It looks like nice weather in the Northlands this week, so I may try a deserted county road or two.
Parallel parking is definitely out. |

I just finished another 1933-1939 style flathead V8 generator conversion. It was converted from the original 6 volt 3-brush configuration to 12 volt, 2-brush for use with a regulator. It will be going to Hershey, along with many other restored generators.

Drilled out the bloody steering column anti-theft bolt. Needed to do that to get the bloody horn rod out to get the bloody light switch c-clip sorted. Which it turned out wasn’t needed. Oh well, experience is the mistake that you made yesterday.

I just finished up my dual axle caterpillar conversion for hauling heavy flathead V8 generator cores. Kind of overkill. But cool 🤣

Local machine shop finished my order ! NEW flathead SUPERCHARGER crankshaft pulleys- 3 grove like originals. We used a 2 grove truck pulley for the design. Even replicated the reverse oiling grove, but not cheap! Each pulley is one piece- machined from a solid Steel blank. Last made in the early 40s? [cast]. Newc

I just finished restoring this 1934 - 1939 style Ford flathead V8 generator. These are a real challenge to restore primarlly due to the complex 8-part bearing system. It originally came with double row tapered roller beaings along with the necessary races, felts and retainers. This was necessary to handle the radial and thrust loads of the fan mounted on the pulley. When I restore one I use a modern double row angular contact sealed bearing with custom machined spacer rings so it all fits together correctly. It is topped off with a cleaned, adjusted, tested and refurbished original Ford cutout. This one is particularly nice because it has a previously rewound armature. If you need one, feel free to reach out to me.
I run one just like it on my 1935 Ford Fordor Deluxe Touring car. Here are a few photos.

I refurbed a stock exhaust manifold with new studs and replaced a cracked one on my 33 coupe. I cut down some head studs and recut the threads. Came out well.

Yesterday I installed a great generator end plate that I was working on and making it a thing of beauty. This end plate though, I used to explore and become familiar with. I introduce everyone to my "felt wick."

I'm often asked about converting Ford 6 volt generators to 12v. Especially those with the pulley mounted fan. This is a 1930s V8 generator that I just finished converting to 12 volt and 2-brush configuration.

Spring Carlisle us just 3 weeks away. I'm trying to get ready :-)
Here is another custom Ford generator I just finished. It is for a 1933 to 1939 style Ford V8. What makes it special is that it is a 3-brush 12 volt negative ground configuration. It uses a new negative ground diode cutout. Note that it uses a terminal stud rather than 2 wires coming out of the generator to the cutout. I build 1933 - 1939 style Ford 12v conversions in either 2-brush or 3-brush configuration. The customer can choose which configuration best suits his needs.

Nobody doing anything on their early V8? I'm surprised this thread is not more active.

I just insalled the Mallory duel piont Charlie set up for the 255 in my 41 pickup. It ran so nice I drove my wife 40 odd miles to her garden club meeting. First time its been out and about since it got here to Missouri. Tim

Got the last 3 unbroken studs out of a spare block I have, used an induction heat tool and a snap-on stud remover. Next project is to get out the 4 broken studs, I’m going to try mig welding a nut on and see what happens.

Drove my flattie to Cars & Coffee this morning early and then drove it to a local car show. Just got home from there.

Walked the Original Portland, Or Swap Friday [up top], found a nice Canadian '41 intake with the fill tube, and a good '34 right front shock. Lots of open spaces in and out., some crazy high prices-some deals. Hope it lasts, Lower race track Swap was sold out months ago and only 3 miles of vendors. Carts and bicycles highly recommended. Called Mac Van Pelt yesterday to order some transmission parts so I can put my top loader back together with a good used cluster gear. Broke a tooth off after only putting 1000 miles on my pickup. Parts will be waiting for me when I get home from vacation.

Saw some green drips on the garage floor. Then found that I was down about two inches of coolant. Replaced a leaky engine block petcock. Cleaned up the mess on the underside. Neither Home Desperate nor Lowest Lowes had one, but ACE Hardware to the rescue!

Had to be towed home about 6 weeks ago when the Columbia on my '41 Ford Special Business Coupe failed to shift. Wouldn't go into high, wouldn't go back into low. Car no go. Parked it in the driveway and didn't look at it for a month. Looked at it last weekend and found that the bolts were loose on the vacuum valve assembly. The actuator never acutated because it was so out of alignment. Tightened the bolts and realigned it last weekend. Got it back in gear so it would drive. Too beat to test shifting. Today (this weekend) I took it for a test drive and shifted it twice back and forth from low to high. Everything perfect. Glad to have my car back!

A few days ago replaced the battery with a new one. next day the new battery was dead. decided to replace the regulator. I have negative ground so polorized it. Ran rough I had a spare rebuilt generator put that on and replaced belts as long as I was in there. ran rough and flooded. Left it to the next day wouldn't start. Put a different coil and condenser readjusted the carburator , turned the key it popped right off. Happy day.

Body work on the front clip of the 47 coupe. It’s starting to look better.

Today i stripped a C69A that I built up for a friend a number of years ago.We went to a swap meet last Sunday, I followed his 39 Merc in my little 35. I noticed his car smoking a little bit from time to time, but following him down a mountain pass , every time he put his foot on the throttle, man, the smoke was horrendous!! I thought he'd blown some rings. Pulled the engine on Monday, finally got it stripped today. Transpires, gudgeon pin circlips on both rear cylinders had broken, both rear cylinders need to be resleeved, new pistons required, full floaters on that journal hammered out; no bearing material left.... 239 engine bored .125" over. It'll need bits....

Out for a test drive after working on the carb. Just had to stop and see if it was true what they say about their hot dogs :-)

World's best? That would be a stretch. But they were good. Nathan's all beef on a steamed bun with mustard, onions and relish. Pretty darn tasty!

i spent some unproductive time on two things.
1) i'm getting popping (unburnt fuel igniting somewhere between the heads and the muffler) in the exhaust. i can actually faintly feel it with my hand at the exhuast tip when it pops. i suspect it's in the crossover pipe but i can't see it. but no matter...i've order a brand new exhaust system and when installed i can eliminate the exhaust system as the cause if it persists. 2) the aftermarket turn signals on my '41 are flakey. i'm trying to convert to LEDs but it's been a struggle. i think i made some progress today in that it was intermittant and now i've got them to the point they don't work at all. you may think that this is a step back, but it will be easier to diagnose the problem now that i have some consistency!
