Default Transmission help please!

Hi

Story in brief, I shipped a '36 pickup to the UK earlier this year which arrived with a worn/damaged 4 speed truck trans. Managed to find a '36 3 speed over here which I collected today. However as we all know nothing is straight forward and I need advice on a couple of problems as follows;

1. Trans was from a right hand drive car so I need to flip the clutch cross shaft around. How do I remove pin in centre of shaft (pic below)

2. Seems to be some damage to teeth/gears (pics below) when I removed shifter housing. Is this likely to cause me problems?

Any advice much appreciated as this is my first flathead and my knowledge is limited. Thanks in advance.

Keith

The splines on main shaft are machined like that. That 1st/rev slider gear is munted! I'd replace it, it has worn right thru the hardening. The pin holding the throwout fork will punch out from below; a bit awkward, but can be done. I normally replace it with a bolt and nut, easier to remove in the future.

looks like the first/reverse slider gear has issues as well as the reverse idler gear,i would rebuild it ...the cross shaft pin can be driven out with a punch

The pin can theoretically be punched out from below, but you might not be able to get a straight shot on it. You might need to drill the head off it and punch it out from above. I did that recently, it went ok.

It would be good if you could slip a new 1st/rev slider in there, and a reverse idler. You really need to look at the condition of the cluster gear and make sure that is ok.

As stated above, the nicks in the splines are stock. If you look at it it is where the milling cutter for the straight splines at the other end of the shaft "run out" into the larger helical spline.

It might be worth stating that peoples views on what is usable vary wildly and while better gears would be desirable, those gears would actually still propel the truck down the road and as long as you aren't street racing or expecting to do mega mileage would probably hold up for a while. Most driving is done in top so the intermediate gears are not under constant pressure. A lot of it depends on how handy you are balanced against how much money you can afford for parts or paying someone to rebuild it for you.

You might not be able to "flip" the release shaft/lever, it will probably be clocked wrong. You might (can't guarantee it, though) be able to use the parts from the truck box.

You can always cut/weld/bend/redrill stuff to get it to work.

Mart.

Thanks Guys

Mart I did think about using the truck shaft but at some stage in its life someone has welded the centre fork to the shaft!! So I don't think that will be an option but as you mentioned if its clocked wrong I could always cut and weld the lever to suit the pedal shaft.

Not going to be doing many miles a year in the truck just attending a few events, definately not drag racing so if those teeth hold out for a while I will be happy.

My throwout shaft was badly worn and needed replace, so I cit it off on each side of the throwiut fork with the sawzall. Easier to remove the pins with the fork and lever in the vise. Ordered new shaft, pins and bushings. Should last a long time now. Rod

Yes I have seen some of the munted gears too.... as others have said the low/reverse slider is "usable," run it, and keep you eye open for another one it will show up. The tooth count is the same, the only differance could be the spline in the center, one good look and you will see the it... as for the idler gear give it a look too.... But run and know what you have ..... OLD....BILL
