Before cutting the drum, or shaving shoes, I would shim either the inner bearing out or the inner race out, or better yet a little on each. Shims are not hard to make out of shim stock. I guess it will really depend on how much room you need. Here again the shims will tell when you have clearance, and how much. Sounds like the new cast drums have a bit of extra meat on them so this must a be wide spread issue.

any chance that the front inner seal was left out??? The metal front inner seal, part number A-1190 , listed on page A-93 in the Snyders catalog , goes under the front inner bearing. If this part is left out it could cause the drums to rub the backing plates and maybe the outer circumferance of the shoes.

Bearings that are worn down on the large end of the rollers will allow the hub to go on too far.If brgs are good try bevelling the outer edge of linings & /or a shim behind inner brg.I wouldnt remove the radius on inner edge of drum as the radius gives it more strength.

Mike's and Snyder's brake drums are the same. Mike purchases the drums that he sells from Snyder's. I qualify this statement with the additional fact that I have been Mike's distributor builder for several years. This position has made it possible to observe what is good and what is not so good in regard to the quality of reproduction parts available to the Model A world. I can assure this audience that Mike's provides top tier parts AND service. I submit that anyone having a problem with the wares that Mike's sells should ring Mike personally for a resolution rather than grumbing in an internet organ. Mike's integrity is beyond reproach. Respectfully, Robert E. Andrews,Jr.

Who is grumbling or belittling Mike in this thread? I am not reading it as such.

I agree with Brent. We're just looking for solutions and knowledge. So Robert, are you aware of anyone else having this problem?

I finally had the opportunity to remove the hub and measure the inner wheel bearing race. The Toyo bearing is .8090" deep, thus substantially less than the measurement Brent took from the Timken bearing. My friend Steve Lewis says he has a pair of the correct Timken bearings and I will try them and report the result.
Many thanks for all your suggestions and help.

I had this same problem with Snyders. Just beveled the edge a bit.
