Installing new fuel pump and rod on my 8BA. I realize the grooved end of the push rod goes up to the pump but the question I have is what is the groove for?!

For the past few decades, I haven't used the engine powered fuel pump. It just isn't very reliable, so I've gone to an in tank electric, like the rest of the cars. Junk yards are full of them!!

I've had the engine pump on my 39 for 20+ years with no problem.

I put a "Charlie NY" rebuilt on the '51 Merc engine I installed in my coupe in 2016. Hasn't missed a beat since.
I removed the electric pump at the same time. |

I think the end of the push rod is hardened to resist wear from pump action. Could that groove be part of the manufacturing process for use with more than one type of pump?

I'm glad to hear that. I assume it's a daily driver?? My truck was a work truck drove it every day. but the fuel pump was my only problem..
