The paint under the stripes will most likely be close to the original shade of black, whereas the rest of the car most likely has faded a bit over time........you will still see the ghosts of the stripes.

Thank you all for the responses. My wife is not able to ride in the car anymore but she does enjoy looking at it.
I will try the easy off technique. Thank you V8coopman for the excellent instructions. I will post the results. Phil |

I've read an article or two about the restoration teams at the Smithsonian Paul Garber restoration facility slowly hand sanding aircraft down one coat at a time to look for original paint colors and markings that may be hidden under subsequent coats of paint. It is a long and tedious process but the only way to verify what's there.
Clear coat 2-stage is easy to color sand but single stage can be color sanded and coated with clear as well. A lot depends on how thick the top coat is and it's current condition. Pin stripes put on with a brush can be fairly thick but they stand proud of the base coat so it can be done if a person is careful but it will take a good bit of time. Fingers will be very smooth after that much hand sanding. |

Probably best to just say sorry, it's too risky to try and remove them. Like it or lump it.

I would mask it and carefully air brush the body color over the striping. Or use a wider brush and hand paint over it. Not rocket science.

Now this makes so much sense. Would the average person notice a black car with black pin striping? If they did, and asked me about it, I would tell them it cost a lot more, but we think it was worth it.
Thank you oldford2 |

Black shows everything. Even if its black on black it will still be noticeable to the trained eye.
