Whatever you do, make sure you can screw the power valve in with your fingers after repairing the threads. Why ruin a good carb by forcing in a bad valve?
The usual damage is from cross-threading and then grabbing a wrench to force it. In this case, it's usually just a few end threads that are damaged and can be filed off. Just clean any burrs off the first good thread so it will start easily.
Or, there are thread files made with a different thread pitch on each side and end for a total of 8 different thread sizes on each file, and files with pitches different from other files. One good source is tool trucks like Mac, Matco, Cornwell, etc.
