Not sure, But take a look under the car to see what is in the way if you try to remove the pan.
Seems strange that there is not some way to remove something in the way rather than taking the engine out.....But could be the case..I guess. Note: One book I had had two ways to remove the pan on my 1933 One was to raised the front of the engine and the other was to bend down the wishbone. I chose to bend down the wishbone. And the engine splash pans. Again.....Get under your car and look and obtain a few publications on the year car you have. Remember....There's more than one way to skin a cat. But why would anyone want to skin a poor puddy cat? Last edited by FrankWest; 03-15-2015 at 08:58 AM. |

You MUST raise the engine as far as you are able. Remove the fuel pump and stand - that will allow the engine to go a bit higher prior to the cowl becoming an interference.
Remove both the transmission and engine mounts as well. Remove the dip stick tube. Once you have the pan loose, rotate the crankshaft until the forward most counter balance is in the "up" position". This is not a fun task but can be done. And please, once you have lifted the engine, place blocks between the water pump (engine mounts) and frame prior to getting your hands in any place that should the engine "fall", you are not injured.

Thanks for all the advice, sounds like a real chore to do this. Also any advice how to install rear glass alone on the '39 sedan?

See my post dated 3-4-2015. I did do it myself so it can be done. Follow the directions in the post.

I'm referring to installation of rear windows above the trunk on a '39 ford sedan!

This can be done alone if your side (quarter) windows are not as yet installed but truly is much easier with two guys. You really need one guy on the inside of the car to apply pressure to the glass while the guy on the outside, pulls the cord and subsequently seats the glass / rubber.

I have a 1941 and did remove the oil pan without lifting the motor.
the starter has to come out. one or both tie rods needs to be lowered. if I rember right its a tight fit coming down. and I think the oil pump had to be removed and let it drop in the pan and it all slid out good.. going back in position oil pan and then install the pump there is room. good luck and remember have fun!! |
