Re: Ballast resistor for 12V coil
I agree with Jay (above). In thinking this over today, I would think it would be more accurate to use the actual voltages typically present in properly functioning automotive electrical systems (6.3...

Re: 276 stroker from 35 years of parts
If you want to test for pressure (which I think is the most important factor), you're gonna hafta simulate the oil loss in the actual engine with a restriction of some sort.
I have no idea what...

Re: '46 Coupe 59AB Starter
I thought all V8 starters between '32 and '53 were the same, with the exception of the '51 up automatic transmission units.
My neighbor has a "growler" so I can make sure the armature is OK. Then...

Re: Optima battery replacement
Generally, the top is a separate piece that should be removeable. I know mine is. Hopefully, the original owner didn't glue everything together.
Since his is a non-standard process, I'm afraid you...

Re: Relocate battery in ‘35
I would personally favor the Optima solution. They are easy to handle and offer other advantages. Don't be put off by the price, they usually last 12-13 years.

Re: Ballast resistor for 12V coil
It should be pretty simple. Just find the resistance of your coil in (ohms) as well as the resistance of the actual resistor. Add them together and run them through a version of the formula I posted...

Re: My next flathead build?
If that bent your mounting plate, I'll bet it is one of those super heavy blocks Ford made specifically for Ski-Tow use. I have heard the walls are so thick that they'll take a 4 inch bore!:D

Re: Car quit working
The first thing I would do is take the cables off of the battery, make sure they are good and clean (as well as the battery posts), reinstall them tightly and try again. Sometimes they get loose and...

I think Ron was answering the O/P's original question. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Re: Timing gear sheared 12 teeth
Nice to know that they are still around; it looks like you may be a source. I dunno, but I would feel better using a cam with a "bolt-on" gear if it's as easy as you say. The concept of a "press-on"...

Re: Ballast resistor for 12V coil
After struggling with this for a long time, I think I have it finally figured out. You don't want to run more than 4 AMPS through the points to avoid burning them prematurely. A practical application...

Re: Timing gear sheared 12 teeth
While the later bolt-on gears '39-'48 and '49-'53 are available on the aftermarket, the earlier "press-on" aluminum gears seem to be made of "unobtanium". Is it possible to use a later ('39-'48) cam?

Re: pennies
I don't buy into this program at all. Racing manifolds already have no carburetor heat passages; street manifolds do. If you're an all out racer, your manifold will take care of any fuel heating...

Re: Disc brakes for wide-5 drums
I am just a bit confused. Why would you need those adapters on a '36? (I am assuming you mean a Ford.)
Good to hear that the Ford wheels fit them though.

Re: Disc brakes for wide-5 drums
One thing to keep in mind. I seem to remember that these use 5/8" studs on the wide five pattern. I checked the Speedway listing and it says they require their 1" bolts. From my days of racing...

Re: Disc brakes for wide-5 drums
Nah, it was different. As I remember it, the guy was casting and machining specialized aluminum wide five hubs.
I believe he quit because of high cost and low demand. (I'm an expert on that after...

Re: Disc brakes for wide-5 drums
I seem to remember that someone on the H.A.M.B. was making special wide-5 hubs for just this purpose. I did a quick look-see and couldn't find it. Maybe someone else here has a better memory.
