Re: Model 'A' Boo Boo's or Oopsie Daisy's

Just today I was installing new valves in my engine, and managed to lose one of the tiny valve keepers through the hole behind the timing gear so it dropped into the oil pan. Luckily I can get a...

Best way to clean intake passages?

I’m in the middle of a valve replacement job and before I fit the new valves, I’d like to clean out the decades of black buildup in the intake passages. It’s black tarry stuff about 1/16” thick.

Re: Found a number stamped on top of my block

You made me curious so I measured the bores with calipers, and they are all .080 over. Apparently the machine shop just stamped one of the pistons and didn’t bother with the other three.

Re: Found a number stamped on top of my block

No, there is no tag, but one of the pistons is stamped .080 on top. Strangely, none of the other pistons have a stamp.

Found a number stamped on top of my block

I took my cylinder head off and found this number stamped on the block next to a cylinder. What do you suppose it is? Machine shop mark? I know the engine has been worked on sometime in the past...

Re: Uh oh, found coolant in the rear intake

I should add that the engine hasn’t been run since last October so apparently it's a slow leak.

Uh oh, found coolant in the rear intake

I took my manifold off today in order to check the valve clearance, and I found a bit of coolant in the rear intake port. I’m guessing I at least need a new head gasket?

How was this pocket ammeter used?

I came across this ammeter in my father-in-law's tool collection. He got it from his father who had a Model A back in the day.

I did a quick search and found several for sale on eBay, mostly...

Re: Rootlieb speedster kit

Both are correct, but for the Rootlieb kit with the tank mounted using the supplied supports, the fuel level will be below the carb inlet unless you have a few gallons in it, as I quickly found out...

Re: Rootlieb speedster kit

Yes if you don’t want to keep the tank at least 1/2 full at all times to get reliable gravity flow. I run a small in-line electric pump and it works fine. Make sure the fuel cap is vented.

Re: Rope Wrap Steering Wheel

I just finished doing mine. The results are very similar to the OP. I used 3.5mm diameter braided jute. I looked into hemp, but the price was over 3 times that of jute and looks the same to me. A...

Re: Vortex intake

I don't have a spare one, sorry. I have been running one for several years with two Model B zenith carbs. It runs great but does take a bit longer to warm up than the stock single carb. ...

Re: Mystic Seaport pre 1930 Car Show

I'm planning to go! It will be chilly in the morning.

By the way, it is actually a "pre 1932" show. I was told that the change was made specifically to cover the Model A production run.

Miniature flathead 4-cylinder

I just came across this Youtube video today, a working model of a flathead 4. The arrangement is very close to our Model A engine. Inspired by it, perhaps?

Re: 7 Tooth Steering box question/request

Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't you have to modify the housing by counterboring if you want to use an o-ring?

Re: Driving Gloves

For a cheaper alternative you can look for gauntlet motorcycle gloves. They most often come in black though so don't look like the vintage brown ones.

Edit: Here's some in brown:

Re: Engine stumbles on acceleration

Oh, I missed that detail about the Tilly carb. My suggestion doesn't apply, I think.

Re: Engine stumbles on acceleration

It may be a long shot, but last year my car started running rough when accelerating and also had higher than normal fuel consumption. The cause was the compensator jet in the carb had come loose...
