I am looking for a hood for my 40 pickup. I guessed that Ford would not have made three different hoods in 40 for the cars and light truck 1/2 ton. I recently asked a well respected member his opinion and he agreed that two hoods were offered, the deluxe and std./P/U or at least that is what I took him to say.
I placed an ad and had someone contact me and tell me I was ill informed and the hood for the P/U is a special. I can't believe that, but how can I verify it. Is it documented anywhere like the 40 book. I am inclined to believe tooling for hoods were expensive, so why would Ford build new tooling for a hood when the vehicles are so close looking from the front. Jon |

The pickup hood is way different. Car hoods will not work.

Pickups are taller, the hood is deeper to compensate.

Cars have stainless trim strips down the sides, pickups do not. Trucks have a raised bead or feature bead instead. Take a good look at any pictures on the net, you will see what I am explaining. Furthermore, trucks are about a half inch taller in the nose (and cowl area) explaining why the nose ornament is truck only, not car. The 40 STD (car) hood stamping is basically a carryover from 1939 DLX car production. Therefore, Ford stamped only two new hoods in 40, one for cars (the Deluxe) and one for half tons. For your truck you need a 40 or 41 half ton hood. The 41 has more and larger trim holes (for the wider deco trim) but can be retro-ed to 40 trim. Nothing else will bolt up with out cutting and welding (unless you are building a custom such as car nose on truck). Hope this helps. RPM

The most obvious difference is where the sides of the hood meets the cowl. The passenger car cowl and the pickup cowl is totally different.

Jon,
Alice and I attend the Canfield Ohio swap meet 2x a year. For the last two years a fellow who sets up near us has brought a nice '41 truck hood. I don't know his name but he sold me the nose piece off the hood. Spring Canfield is May 3 4 & 5 let me know and I'll look for him and hook you guys up if you are interested. It's worth a shot. The nose trim holes in a '41 hood are pretty big but for sure it can be retroed to a '40. Charlie ny [email protected] |

Speaking of hoods, does anyone know if the under hood bracing is being reproduced, a couple of folks have contacted me with hoods but no bracing....
