.145 overbore on '37 block?
I need a 21 stud block for my 36 pickup. I'm using heads with pumps. My first 37 block turned up lots of cracks during mag inspection. A local machine shop has a 37 block available at a good price ($400), already cleaned, inspected and bored. The problem for me is that it's bored .145" over. The owner says he did this regularly 'back in the day' for circle track racing without problem, using later .020 over pistons. I have two worries - 1, will this overheat in a street engine? 2, I intended to use aluminum 35/36 heads which need flat top pistons and later pistons are all domed, so I need modified heads or custom pistons.
What's the consensus of the experts here? What would you do? I already have .100 over flat tops, if I can find a good '37 block, I have all the parts I need, but finding a good block seems to be a real crapshoot with lots of time and work involved each time. Have the shop sonic test the cylinder walls for thickness. If they are all above .100", you'll be good to go. |
