Default unleaded gas in old cars???

We have an original 39 Chevrolet coupe and wonder what you guys use for gas (unleaded with additives?). The car appears to have an original motor that has not be updated to hardened valve seats..

If your involved with Sunoco, I'd think you would be telling us what fuel to use.

It's not like you have much choice and it's the same cost to pull the head now as later. I'd drive it until you need a valve job. You might have more trouble with the gas eating fuel pump diaphams. I'd add some MMO to the tank to help lubricate the valves. Good Luck.

High octane with octane boost and lead replacement additive is what I run. Seems to keep the knocks down, and runs pretty good.

I don't know about GM but Ford, from 1932 to 1953 recommended using Amoco white gas which was the equivalent of unleaded gas. I've always run regular unleaded gas in our Flatheads with an occasional tank of mid grade.

I have always used 87 octane unleaded. some states have 85 octane. never a problem.

Steve, I drove the '53 Panel up to meet the guys for the Saturday Breakfast Club, the truck is still kicking under a load in first & second on acceleration and smoothes out in high. I was averaging between 55 and 60 mph with an occasional kick. I think I will still have to do some tweaking on the timing and maybe check out the vacuum advance... I’m thinking about pulling the distributor and putting the old one in to see if that makes any difference.
