1936 Ford Choke & Throttle Rod Joints
How are the choke and throttle rods attached to the rod joints on a 1936 Ford?

Imarsch36-
This question comes up frequently. The correct way is to crimp the rods together using the sleeves. This is how the factory did it. However, I have always threaded the the rod ends and used a turnbuckle to tie them together. This allows the writing on the knobs to be aligned and also allows for easy disassembly if the dash knobs need to be removed. Tom |

Tom,
So you use a turn buckle instead of the rubberized rod joint? Larry |

Larry-
Yes, I use a turnbuckle. To the best of my knowledge, rubberized rod joints were never used by Ford on '35-'36 cars. Tom |

Re: 1936 Ford Choke & Throttle Rod Joints
When I installed the couplings for my 36 I ended up aligning the choke and throttle knobs and then used a wire feed welder and tack welded them. Replacement couplings were much harder steel and very difficult to crimp on the shaft.

You can accomplish the same thing using Loctite (for cylindrical objects) or one of the better glues such as J B Weld.

Re: 1936 Ford Choke & Throttle Rod Joints
I have a 34 and used coupling nuts, they are a long threaded nut, 10/32 or 10/24 , then threaded each section and adjusted for the correct length and lettering alignment , a lock nut can be put on if you want but when installed they never move ... JMO .. AL

Slight change on this subject. How do you guys bend them so that they look alike as they go from the carb to the cowl?

I bend them in a soft jawed vice.
