The ones I have, spare and one on engine, are black with clean aluminum ends.

Terry: Thanks for the input. I have several generators some all black and some as you described. Before I paint something that shouldn't be I want to get it right. Dave

One can find numerous Ford archives photos with all black painted generators and starters, but nary a one partially unpainted. Some enerator rebuilders likely would not bother to repaint them and that likely accounts for those that show up 76 years later only partially painted.

I have seen a lot of generators with 'silver' aluminum end plates, but closer examination will usually show signs of black paint. As David G points out, factory photos seem to indicate that they were painted all over black.

Since we're on the topic (i asked a while back with no response) what color is correct? gloss, semi-, chassis black? flat? I know its not like the end of the world important...

The 35-36 Early Ford V8 Club book states they were "Gloss Black with cast iron pulley on the front". Don't know if chassis black is considered Gloss Black or not. Page 105.
