Or is it Mercury/Ford? Bought a couple 1938/39 Spider-caps this afternoon in Northern Illinois as extras and got to look through more caps. He has what I first thought were just 1939 Mercury caps but then realized 2 are the rare Ford/Mercury caps. I'm not interested in buying them but wanted to let him know what they might possibly be worth. These are the steel with stainless on the inside, some dents on the stainless. Thanks

Can't tell unless there are really good photos - front and back- with a well written complete description.

If they are the authentic Ford Mercury caps, they are certainly worthy of a premium price, even with dents on the stainless, which are not too difficult to restore. Consider, though, being only two of four, a buyer would still have to find the other two, so keep the premium price reasonable for that reason.

Here is my $ .02 take and this comes from someone who owns a very early 39 Mercury Town Sedan with said hub caps, a Dec 39 Mercury Sedan Coupe, a 40 Mercury 4 door convertible, an extra set of said Ford/Mercury hub caps as well as an unknown set of "Plain" 39 Mercury caps with NO nomenclature of any kind on them.
1) Condition condition condition. 2) These hub caps and reported story for them were only on cars produced in the first three weeks or SO production. Are they rare, in that sense, yes BUT IMO there are two other sets of FULL Stainless Steel caps that are MORE rare than these...as I have documented 5 different sets of caps available for the 39 Mercury. Just how many cars are out there that would fit that criteria (Early Ford V8 Club judging standards) for them to be "correct" on a car........ the odds of that is slim at worst, I would bet none to one at this juncture of the car collecting hobby and amount of 39 Mercury's I see. 2) You have to find someone who is into Mercury's.....We are pretty much out on a Island as they are SO different than Ford's and NO real reproduction parts, very "few" used parts AND restoring them these days is difficult at best. 4) There are two that I have followed for MONTHS now on EPay....one is asking $ 450.oo the other $499.oo the key word in this take is "MONTHS". There have been one or two other AND a set of 4 in recent past....The set of 4 IF memory serves she was asking like $800/$900 dollars, which did not sell. I talked to her and gave her my "take" on them and gave her a price range that I would be willing to pay IF she decided that she wanted to sell them and never heard another word nor have I seen them listed again "for sale". 5) Depending on the condition, I would be interested in them, AS mentioned before, I have two sets of 4ea and would like to have one more each for the spare tire. IF you so desire, you can PM me and I will give you my contact information to pass along to the owner. MY guess and bet would be that I am one of very very few who would be interested.....IN deference to what FORD38V8 posted above.....No offense to his take by any means. |

I tend to agree with Robert. Simple economics. Supply vs. demand.
Sure, the supply is low but the demand? Hardly a demand at all, especially these days. As Robert has correctly pointed out, asking prices have zero to do with sold prices. And yes Alan, a full set of four may garner more (each) than one or two at a time but balance that with a guy attempting to make up a full set vs. how many full sets are ever offered.

RockFla & guys great info. T/Y
Since original post was also addressing 39 Caps. Fall 2025 , we had our 39’ Tudor Deluxe at the “Hot Rod Fallout”, in South Glastonbury, Conn. Standing in line to purchase an Event T Shirt for a friend that could not attend. I look over and vendor next door has nice stuff. I mean nice Olde Frd stuff. Stack of Caps on his table closest to me is 6) 39’ Deluxe with thin Cardboard in between. Here we go. Mean time , should have let you guys know, we have some RUFF Caps, so rough we have been running without them. So, in discussing the pile on table, without looking at them. He has other Tote,s near by . Walk away with 4. 3) are a 9 1) is a 8.5. |
