Default Y Block Fuel Pump

The dual stage fuel pump in my '55 Vic 272 has failed. Who still rebuilds these? My info is that new pumps now come from China and are crap.

I agree, China supplies junk fuel pumps.
You can try X Ford Barn member Charlie ny

Fyi, there are no US manufacturers of that style new replacement fuel pump. All new parts suppliers are selling the defective chinesium clones. (for the last 5+ yrs, you'd think they'd have it figured out by now)

Below: these folks rebuilt a couple older dual action pumps for me. 6 months & approx 1000 miles now and still working fine.

AG Rebuilders is another rebuilder of pumps. They have done a couple of them for me with no problems

Good thing I have a spare plus an NOS pump. The OEM pumps look easy to rebuild if good parts are available.

Had a conversation today with Charlie NY about rebuilding my fuel pump. I described mine and he said it was likely made in China and is not rebuildable. I sent photos for confirmation.

The chinese fuel pumps can usually be spotted by having Phillips head screws.

Anteek29, here's where I got the info about fuel pumps with Phillips head screws... It mentions old original style pumps with hex head and flat slot screws are ok.

This attached article was published in the Spring of '21, almost a year after the defective off-shore fuel pumps were first noticed.

AFAIK the 'new/corrected' non-Airtex fuel pumps mentioned in the article never materialized.

I've seen many comments in Y-block and '55/'57 T-bird groups about the poor build quality of chinese replacement fuel pumps and they are as Charlie NY mentioned, not rebuildable.

After reading the responses to this inquiry I went out to my 55 and checked. Slotted screws and "Made in U.S.A." cast into the top.

I also looked on ebay to see what OEM pumps might be out there just in case I need one down the road. I see some with a glass sediment bowl on the bottom and some without. The one on my car does not have one. Which is correct for 55? Seems like a glass bowl hanging down that low might be susceptible to rocks tossed up by the tires.

Then and now has a good selection.

My 54 Y-block has the sediment bowl on top and the dual diaphragm for wipers.

Combo pumps - 54 Fuel pumps are one of a kind and the only YBlock pump that I am aware of that had the filter on top. All the rest had the filter on the bottom (with some exceptions that I ran across). TBird pumps did not have a filter as part of the pump.

The pumps w/o the vacuum assist are different and I have no idea about them.

Mine has the vacuum assist and no glass bulb on the bottom. There is an in line filter upstream from the pump (clear plastic) that lays horizontally along the bottom of the inner fender.

Sounds like I have a T-bird pump on my Fairlane.

Yes, most likely. Same as mine.

As I mentioned, there are non-TBird pumps w/o the bottom filter, and In fact I have one. I bought it from some one that had taken it off his 55 sedan as a working pump. I know it is not a TBird pump because the bottom part is different and the in/out ports are reversed or have a different orientation than a Tbird pump (don't remember which).

May try to order a rebuild kit from these guys pretty soon. Need to pull mine and see exactly which pump it is first.
