1953 Mercury vent glass seal replacement
It's been a while since I've posted, but I sure could use some information right now !!! I've been trying to find info/video on replacing the vent window seals on my '53 Mercury. Lots of info for trucks, etc., but nothing on the car.
Has anyone on here worked on this model car window, and if so could you PLEASE help me? |

Re: 1953 Mercury vent glass seal replacement
Sorry, didn't see your post previously In case you haven't figured it out already, it is quite easy. Open the vent window to gain access to the top screws. Just remove the top screws and then the bottom nut off of the stud, and then pull the window out of the frame. You have to take the inner door panel off to access the nut. Hope this helped.

Yeah, I'm more concerned with how to remove the entire assembly. I have the rubber seals for replacement, I just didn't know how to get the whole thing out.

To remove the entire assembly: Roll the window down as far as it goes. For a 2 door sedan, remove the inner door panel and trim. Then remove the top bolts holding the vent window to the frame (top arrow). Then remove the nut, washer and screw at the bottom of the frame (bottom arrows). Now you should be able to pull the vent window assembly away from the window glass, then up and out of the door. Anyone with further suggestions or hints please chime in, I am used to a convertible and it is allot easier. Now dissemble the vent window from the frame and install the new rubber seal. That having been said, if you just want to replace the vent window seal (picture #6), it is a bit simpler. Roll the window down as far as it goes. For a 2 door sedan, remove the inner door panel and trim. Remove the bottom nut, along with the spring ans the bottom washer, off of the vent window stud. Now remove the two screws in the vent window hinge. Now pull the top of the vent window in and maneuver it up and out of the top washer. You can now remove the seal and replace it. Now install the vent window in reverse order. Pictures (4-6) Picture # 7 is just the vent window sitting in the seal, out of the frame. Hope this helped. Re: 1953 Mercury vent glass seal replacement
Eddie Morgan, sent me pictures of this vent windows. Rather than screws attaching the window to the hinge, he has rivets.
I now see that in the Custom's, as apposed to the Monterey's, that all of the vent window components were riveted in, rather than screwed in, making it a much bigger project to change out the seals. Thank you, Roy Last edited by Merc Cruzer; 11-08-2023 at 01:28 PM. |
