This is the passenger side head off of the industrial engine I have. Severe damage on the casting, but absolutely no damage to the cylinder or the piston. Just trying to figure out what happened here?
A machinist friend of mine said it could’ve been a flaw in the casting, but I don’t see how it could’ve ran for years if it was a flaw. |

Compression vs. head and compression won.

Given the rust and crust in the rest of the engine it will need to come apart anyway. I would very carefully inspect the cylinder bore, rod, and piston for that hole.

I’ve seen that in old engines left out to the weather It broke at the weakest point, might have cylinder wall cracks as well.

Rust or weak casiting in combustion chamber or a combination and the compression finally caused it to give way.
