40 Ford windnoise
I'm used to wind noise in my 32's but how much wind noise should I expect in my 40 standard coupe. I've got good wind lace around the doors and the window seals are all new and tight. I realize it will not be as quiet as my new Silverado but the noise in my coupe seems excessive? I really don't want to add sealing rubber as my doors close so nice and the rubber is not the most attractive.

Re: 40 Ford windnoise
I know it is not proper but I installed two GM air vents in the back of the cab in my 40 Pickup and with windows up and cowl vent open you can carry on a conversation at 65 MPH

They are not too noisy in my opinion. But yes, not nearly as air tight as a modern car. There should be a seal at the front of the door between the hinges. Also, a seal that goes from the "B" pillar forward to the upper hinge on the body. If those are absent, there's little to stop the wind from entering the car.

Re: 40 Ford windnoise
Gary, be sure to install the 1940 bottom door seals and sill plate. I never removed the doors and hinge pins are still nice and tight. No droop or drop. The door seals are actually quite resilient and do "crush" enough to allow good door closure. Also installed seals "Kube" mentioned. They are also resilient. Very little wind noise unless you open the windows at highway speed. Catalog is from the early days of DRAKE when he was in Canoga Park, CA.

Re: 40 Ford windnoise
Open the door and place a piece of paper on the rubber seal then close the door and pull on the paper. There should be a little resistance. Try it in several areas. At least you'll know where the wind noise is coming from. It may be as simple as adjusting the door.

Re: 40 Ford windnoise
Don't buy the seal Carpenter sells for the body above the door from the B pillar to the top hinge. The Drake one is the correct shape. What I got from Carpenter looks like it would fit a road grader, has a flange on it about 1 1/2 " wide. Maybe it was mis-labelled but more hassle and cost to send it back from my side of the US then its worth.

Re: 40 Ford windnoise
How good do your vent glasses fit to the divider bars?
Mine are not cut correctly and I get some noise. Tim (OlScrounger on the HAMB) set me straight on that. KUBE may have some input on that as well. |

Re: 40 Ford windnoise
hotrodA: The vent window felt and seal fit good on my 40 Ford. Took lots of patience to get it all adjusted so the windows roll up and down easily. Steering wheel is Crestliner.

Re: 40 Ford windnoise
Thanks!
Those DO fit up nice. I think that my door glass rises at an angle, creating the gap. I’m not ready right now to pull the window frames and door panels to elongate the left mechanism holes and adjust it. Lazy. |

Re: 40 Ford windnoise
hotrodA: I understand. When you do decide to readjust be sure to have plenty of patience and be very carful not to crack the glass. You have to have the patience of a toothache and walk away from it when you get frustrated.
