40 coupe w/48 block. I had the gen rebuilt last year. Rechecked again a few weeks ago along with the regulator. Dash gauge comes up slowly mid way and then into the yellow, then to green. Batt shows 6.3 volts.
Where on the regulator do I measure voltage. As always Thanks in advance. Paul in CT |

From one novice to another, I would check from 'A' to ground going into the regulator and from 'B' to ground coming out of the regulator.

I’m just a hack but I check voltage at the battery before I start then recheck after the car is running to compare readings

OK, nothing at A or B. Also nothing (maybe o.3 or so) on each post of the gen. Gen and regulator just checked. Any ideas?? Have had it running and batt shows 6.2-6.3V, still pos ground.

Then start the engine and take another reading obviously you want to see a higher voltage reading with the engine running if you see an increase in voltage write that down. Now if you did see a higher reading in the previous step now turn the head lights on this will add load to the charging system which if working correctly should carry the added load of the lights being on. Ronnie and Bob C: WIl try this tomorrow. Dash voltage meter still only goes to a little past the red zone into the yellow..

Not running a fully charged battery should read in the 6.3 - 6.4 volt range and the B terminal on the voltage regulator should read the same as the battery minus any voltage loss in the wiring. Running (with the rpms up) the battery should be seeing 7+ volts, but this is somewhat dependent on the system load (light on, etc).

Batt terminal - to regulator case+ engine RPM need to be increased to see full generator output. Use an analog meter 7.0 to 7.7 v is good but 7.2 to 7.5 is better.
First with engine off turn on country headlamp beam for one to two minutes then measure battery voltage at the regulator with headlights off should be 6.25 to 6.6V if not recharge the battery first. Then run engine at medium speed and with engine and regulator warm measure the highest voltage. You can see it is important your voltmeter is accurate. |
