I am in the process of putting my 1957 292 back together after a refreshing and the timing gears/chain is next. Should the gears slide onto the shafts easily or should there be resistance. Mine slide on easy about half way then stop cold. The cam is new and the crank is original. Also, how far do the gears get pushed on. I'm used to small block fords, these y-blocks are a different kind of animal! Thanks for any help in advance.

The Woodruff key may not be fully seated into its slot or might have a burr on it.

I haven't put the woodruff in the cam slot yet, the gear goes on to about halfway into the slot. That's why I was wondering how far on it goes. The small woodruff key is in the crank and the small gear also goes on about halfway. Thanks!

My gears slid on quite easily. Should bottom out. Are you trying to install with the chain, or just the gears? If just the gears I would check for burrs. If with chain you have to install evenly or it will bind. I don't believe the shafts have a taper.

I will install with the chain, was just test fitting the gears ahead of time. Thanks!

They should fit with a close tolerance fit but now days, you never know what you're going to get. I wouldn't want it too tight or the next guy will have to use a puller to get it off.

Thanks, rotorwrench, tommyleea and dmsfrr, does any one know how far the gears go on or does by tightining the bolt on the end automaticly set that? Thanks

They should go all the way on and seat. That fuel pump eccentric & counter weight or spacer ring, depending on how it's configured, all have to go on there too.
