Babbitt Finish Boring
Can someone post a picture or sketch of how to properly grind a tool for the finish cut of the last few thousandths on a newly poured Babbitt bearing?
I'm not happy with the finish I'm getting. Thanks in advance. |

Re: Babbitt Finish Boring
Are you trying to used a sharp point or rounded? Ok, that is about all I can help with. I have only done a little brass and have found a rounded tip does a better cutting job. Carbide or high speed tool steel?

Re: Babbitt Finish Boring
Is this hand scraping? I have a tool if I can find it I'll offer. it is curved.
AAH OK re-read the post, never mind. Altho' that was a time honored method for final fit. |

HSS with about .060 radius.
I changed radius experimenting but still too rough to suit me. I used Vic Zannis' setup just for my own use. I served a Tool & Die Apprenticeship many moons ago and still work at it so I have a fair knowledge on grinding tools. |

OT RE hand scraping, I do the high spots and seat with time saver.
Is this the finish you are looking for? Wish he said more about the tooling. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sCsTCNjXaKc Gene French make and sell a boring bar setup, he might be able to help. I sent a PM with his contact information. Mark

Re: Babbitt Finish Boring
I talked to Tom who has been poring A blocks for a few years. With the KRW set up, that is correct. The bearings are ruff bored then reamed.

Re: Babbitt Finish Boring
I sure would like to learn how to do this, and be able to buy the equipment reasonably. I'm 58, and on my second career. I don't wanna make a fortune, just be able to keep these As on the road. I can hardly believe the prices that are being charged. Plus it sounds like no one really cares about quality any more. Schwallms does quality, and they made up my assemblies, but gosh it's expensive.

Re: Babbitt Finish Boring
Herm, That is beautiful work. Having done it myself I can attest how much work and skill there is in doing it. Time/tooling, and quality work all cost. It's not cheap to own/buy/ and learn and do it and it is worth the cost to have someone like Herm or Schwalms do it.
