Default Installing steering column on 1946 RHD car

I tried putting the steering column back in my 46 Business Coupe today. IÂ’m having trouble getting it past the side of the engine. Is there a trick to getting it in?

I pulled it and the engine out about two years ago. The engine went back in ok this morning. Should the steering column have gone back in first?

Yes a pain, try loosening the starter boltsthey are a tight fitting combo , also try leaving the pitman arm off untill steering box is in & starter tight.
Good Luck!
Cheers

Hi, I don't know about your 46, but on my 35 phaeton, I also made the mistake of fitting the engine into the frame, then bolting back the body and then trying to fit the RHD column. I took the starter motor and right side exhaust manifold off and still not enough room to get the steering box fitted. I then had to undo motor and tranny mounts and lift the motor to the left side and tilt the motor to get the column into place.
I then bolted the motor back into place and found that I could not get the starter back into place, as the steering box is in the way, so again had to lift the motor to refit the starter.

I remember doing mine may years ago with the wheels on the ground and it was a prick of a job. I may have even had to take the outer tube off and push it through from the engine bay side and reassemble it which was a mission in itself. If you can get the car up in the air what Brian says might be your best bet.

I got the steering column in today. It was a bit of an ordeal. I had to remove the seat, the battery tray assembly and the starter motor.
