1941 Ford serial numbers ran from 18-5,896,295 to 18-6,769,035. 91A is a the model prefix for 1939 Fords (for 1941, it's 11A). There were no VIN's as we know them today. Sounds like someone made up a number for your car. For more information on flathead serial numbers, see http://www.vanpeltsales.com/FH_web/f...ialnumbers.htm

Is that the serial number on the frame or title? The prefix is for a 1939 Ford, but number series does not match.
the production numbers.

The earlier posts are correct. Go back and check the title, the number stamped into the frame near the steering box and the number stamped into the pad on the transmission. What you find may lead to an explanation.

In 1941, both V8 and G model 6-cylinder engines were available. The VIN prefix *18 would be for a V8 with 221CID 85 HP, The *1GA is the prefix for a 6-cylinder, and the prefix *99A would be for those rare occasions where a Mercury/truck 95 HP 239 CID V8 engine was utilized. I'd check the VIN on the frame rail to see what it has. Titles can have mistakes on them sometimes.

Check the entire top of the left frame rail from the firewall to the front crossmember for the number. On most of the '41's I have seen the number is usually near the front crossmember.

GA41,

I also own a 41 Ford Business Coupe with a Mercury Serial Number. It originally had a Merc 95 horse Flathead in it from the factory. I know this is an old post, but I wouldn't sell the car just yet. It may be more rare than initially thought. I'm still researching it.

41 Ford Vin and Model Classification?
I am new to this forum and I’m not seeing the option to create a new thread, so I’m attaching a similar question to this older thread. Hopefully someone with some knowledge on this subject will see it. Your input would be appreciated.

I own a 41 Ford Super Deluxe Business Coupe. I have had it for 50 years. It was a project my dad and I built when I was in high school. It has a mercury Serial number on the frame and on the title (99-361709). It had a Mercury Flathead in it prior to us acquiring it. The previous owner took it out for another project. It was verified by the 2 previous owners that it had the Merc engine in it. A small town, we connected after it was fixed up. I would post pictures of the VIN on the frame and title but this forum isn't allowing me to do it.

My question is, could buyers in 1940 special order these vehicles with the Merc engine and would this be considered a model 11A-77C Special Coupe because of the Merc Serial Number. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

In 1941, the program to obtain a Mercury engine and have it installed in a Ford was made official. Prior to that (1940 models) this program was kept rather secretive.
Thus, in 1941, there were quite a few Fords built with a factory installed Mercury engine. Quite a few but still, not many relative to how many total 1941 Fords were built.
The model number of your car remains the Ford model designation. The serial number was supposed to reflect the Mercury engine, IE the 99 prefix.

I have a 1941 Ford, Ser #18-6018441 which is well into the '41 sequence of numbers, but is titled as a 1940.
