Hi Guys,
Took my car out for a longer drive today. When I started I right away noticed that the Choke does not work. Mechanical connection from dashboard to the engine seems ok. See pics. What can it be ? Thankful for help. Bernd |

The "V" on your choke lever may have a deep groove worn it; in addition, the little lever on the choke shaft may be worn thin. Ive seen the "V" spread on them as well.

The lever on the end of the choke shaft seems to be rotating as intended, and is between the fork prongs of the choke lever, so not sure why the choke isn't working. Maybe remove the air cleaner and see if the choke plate is opening and closing (engine off) while you pull and push the dash knob.

It appears the choke plate is moving properly, but the fast idle function isn't working. The idle speed screw on the choke lever that is supposed to be riding on the throttle cam, to set both normal idle and fast idle, is not on the cam. See below

Yes, lever to control looks to be tightened against the tab on the fast idle lever behind it that it should be camming against.
Start by loosening the screw that the control lever pivots on and push the top of lever behind it towards rear of car. Tighten the pivot screw...if you can! I suspect that it has a screw that is too long to allow it to be mounted that wrong...you may have to shorten the screw to pull the control lever down against its pivot! Any way F1 spotted the location of the problem! As part of this, the relationship of the fork at top of lever to the tab on choke shaft is rather delicate...slight problems there render it kaput. It is substantially moved by the problem F1 noted. My '48 Ford put on a lot of miles in Germany and Europe in the early '50's when we lived in Hamburg. |

Along with what has been mentioned I see the lever attached to the side of the bowl is bent so that the idle speed adjusting screw is not contacting the throttle arm. Remove the lever and straighten it, all will be well. Of course you'll have readjust the idle speed. Danke, Charlie ny |

Summary: You have two vertical lever pivoting on the casting with screws at pivot. Rear one needs to be arranged so the tab sticking out of it is to the rear of the front lever, rubbing against the "elbow" right behind front lever screw. Then when front lever is pulled by the choke knob the rear one will be moved by that contact.
Then, down at the bottom, as shown on F1's arrows, the screw on the rear lever needs to push against the rear edge of the flat part he highlights. I would actually suggest that you start by removing the 2 levers so you can see how they pivot...they might not even be fully on their pivots now. Good pictures: go to http://www.norgv8club.org/ click on "all documents indexed" click on "service bulletins" then look at the two 9510 bulletins...one is on how it works, the other on fixing it, both with many pictures. Both cover stromberg and Ford carbs, so choose the right pictures. In the reconditioning set, look at page 82, drawing 43. |

Ok, looked at my car and yes the screw does not sit
on the throttle cam. If I got you right it has to, yes ? What confuses me most is that I have not had the problem yesterday and have no idea why it is misaligned or bend today. Bruce, thank you for the link, I'll do my best. |

The portion of the choke lever with the throttle screw in it may have gotten bent over. You shouldn't pull out the choke without pushing down a little on the gas pedal first.

Forgot to look at a carb last night, but I believe those arms pivot on a protrudung spigot on casting and the screw just keeps them in place. I suspect screws were loose or too long, and levers are actually off their pivots and have a lot of extra movement. Screw could have vibrated out slowly allowing the lever to become free range yesterday...

Exactly right, the lever fits over a shoulder, with the return spring behind it, and the plunger pushing against it. The washer and screw that retain the lever do not tighten against the lever, they are against the shoulder.
