Default Gas Gauge Inner Nut

The picture is of the gas gauge from my early 30 coupe. Notice the inner nut. The standard tools I have do not fit. They fit a 5/8 opening. Mine has a 21/32 opening for the tool. The lens in the middle is smaller and does not appear to have a face plate behind it. I looked in the judging standards and did not find it mentioned (maybe I was speed reading).

I am curious about this nut. What can you guys tell me about it? Bill

Bill,
Hard to tell but it looks like it has the points on it like the standard inner nut... If so get yourself one of the repro aluminum inner/outer wrench sets. If it only has four points you can make a tool to do the job. My suggestion is to make sure your fuel level is down below the gauge and remove the outer nut which will remove the gauge assembly and then you can deal with it on the bench. It may need to be replaced. You can determine once off. Once out you can soak the inner nut with penetrant to help loosen and even a little light heat from a heat gun to help loosen the hold on it from the old fuel.

Once apart you can proceed with restoring the assembly.

Also disconnect the battery any time you're opening up the gas gauge.

I like to remove the gauge as Larry said, then I remove the pin and arm so I can lay the gauge on a 1 x 4 clamped in the vice. This way I can put a lot of down pressure and twisting force on the inner nut, and not damage the gauge body.

Those aluminium tools sold by the vendors are rubbish. I made a set myself. Much easier to use and cost nothing (but a little time and some scrap)

Thanks for the information on inner nut removal, but I am more interested in the inner nut than how to remove it. The inner nut is a six point not and eight point nut. The standard tools (as you can see in some of the pictures) remove an eight point nut. The lens in the middle is smaller and does not appear to have a face plate behind it. I looked in the judging standards and did not find it mentioned.

Can someone help identify the inner nut? Bill

you are going to have to fabricate something from square steel tubing....be patient and make sure the fit is dead on perfect or you'll strip the whole thing.
