I would like to put dual exhaust on my otherwise stock 46 coupe. There is a company that advertises in Hemmings that sells these setups. Would just going to a muffler shop be better? what have been your experiences? Thanks Rich

Take the time and ask around at some of the local car shows. In a community like yours, there has to be a favorite exhaust shop or two around the area. Many of these ESTABLISHED shops do some beautiful and exacting custom work. I AM NOT talking about your Midas muffler-type shops. You'll end-up much happier with a custom-fit job rather than a "maybe" fits-all kit in a box. DD

I had a custom exhaust shop put duals and Smithys on my '41. Great job and nice fit for everything. I am very pleased and have been for 16 years. Highly recommend you do this.

On our 46.....Find an expert pipe bender in your area. remove the crossover and block the passenger side crossover entry. Then come off the front of the driver's side manifold and then back around the steering box and down thru the hole in the frame to head back. Just remember to clear the clutch pedal when depressed. Breathing is not a problem on a stock 46 but duals will improve some. Don't waste $$ on headers because they won't help performance and some require "fitting". Steel headers will result in more noise in the cabin. Talk to your pipe guy about pipe sizes and then call Brockman and they will make to order. Inlet size, outlet size, length and glass or steel pack. JMO

That is very good advice, indeed. Dual exhaust really doesn't add to performance, but that sound is very, very sweet.

Lee, I took your advice and called Boo. He uses Dan's performance muffler, Dan did two cars for me in years past. System turned out great. Now here is the catch, with the new system, while cruising along at very light load, there seems to be a very slight misfire, almost like it is too lean. With the slightest throttle pressure this misfire goes away. Could the reduced backpressure from duals with straight thru glasspacs require fatter jets in my carburetor ? Thanks Rich
