I'm cleaning out my shop and have two fan assemblies I want to sell. The only problem is that I don't know what engines/vehicles they belong on. One is four bladed - the other has six blades. Both are for wide belts. Can you guys help?

6 blade looks just like the setup on my 8BA/8RT in my F-1. Not sure of the 4 blade

The 4 blade fan is for a '49 Ford 8BA passenger car.
6 blade is truck. |

The strange thing is that they both appear to have the cartridge sealed ball bearings. So the truck fan must be a '53, fairly rare.
4-blade wide belt could also be Merc as I recall. What diameter are the blades?

Both fans are 18 inches diameter. The six bladed one has a much bigger hub with an apparent drain/fill plug. The four bladed one seems to have a sealed bearing. When did the cars shift from wide to narrow belts? 49/50? I assume trucks stayed wide. Is that true?

There was a thread about the 6-blade fans on FTE, they were apparently an option on F-5's and 6's. I've seen a couple myself, one had aluminum blades tho?
I looked at the pics above again, and see that the 6-blade does appear to have a big hub. Trucks stuck with wide belts thru '52, I'm not 100% sure about '53's.

My '49 F4 v8 has a 6blade fan with aluminum blades. I have the fan from my '47 COE, it is also 6 blade. I think it has aluminum blades also.

My 1949/54 Ford Australia Chassis & Body Parts Book lists 59T8600B, a 6 bladed fan for all 49/54 F series trucks & 51A8600, a 4 bladed fan for all 49/54 sedans & utilities..
But who knows what has been swapped around during the past 60 years! Cheers, Neil. |
