Default Trunk lid hinges...

The deck (trunk) lid hinge bracket is located on the inside flange of the deck lid.

Just where does the hinge bracket that is attached to the upper quarter panel go? To the "outside" of the quarter panel where you can see it OR to the "inside" of the quarter panel where you can not see it?

Also, is the placement of this bracket the same on 28-31 cars with trunks or is the placement different for 28-29 cars as compaired to the 30-31 cars?

Thanks.

Steve,
I was digging through my cache of model A pictures and found one that shows the hinge on a 28 or 29 coupe that has always had a trunk. I am pasting the picture below. It is a little hard to see, but you can see it. It is mounted just like my trunk hinge.

This would seem to work OK and make sense with an original hinge set. I don't think it would work for the current repro set. But it does make me wonder if this original would also work if the body piece was installed to the outside of the rain gutter.

Good question I have a set of the expensive repro hinge sets looking at them they seem to thick to mount like Rustys .

I am starting to think 28/29 trunk hinges were mounted on the gutter side (thinner hinges) and 30/31's (like the repros) are mounted on the other side, as they are thicker hinges. My 28 coupe hinges mount on the gutter side and work and fit just fine.

I don't know much since it's been nearly 40 years since I messed with one. However there are two points that suggest you are correct. The '28-29 models have the small "T" moulding which creates a wider gap between the mounting point and the lid. Second, there was an "A" version of the body half for '28-29 models and a "B" version for '30-31 Coupes and Roadsters.

Tom
from what I have read the Cabriolet only came with a rumble seat. if you want to use it as a trunk you would put the hinges outside under the T molding like the 28-29`s because the whole trunk opening area is the same as a 28-29 coupe. the only thing I`m not sure of is on the 29 Cabriolet did they use the 29 deck lid. with the latch in the early location.

Steve, I think that answers the question about the 28-29's. Thanks for posting.

This discussion got me out in the garage to look at my late 31 Standard Coupe. It appears that the trunk hinge pin assembly mounts to the gutter top from the inside - I can feel it and the two mounting bolts but can't get my fat head in a position to actually see it. It is in kind of a blind curve so would be tricky to remove, especially if rusty. The hinge pin fits into a hole in the corresponding bit of hardware that is mounted to the deck lid.

Next up, I finally found an original brace for holding up the deck lid and wonder if anybody knows the size and thread pitch of the two screws that mount it to the lid? Thanks!

if you are talking the hinge pins they are 3/8" NC, the bolt has a 1/2 head on it. the other two screws and nuts are 1/4 -20 NC

Exactly. This is a great subject and really brings out good information on a pretty obscure aspect of authentic restoration. Wholly worthwhile.

No, not the trunk hinges. I was actually asking about the screws for attaching the deck lid support brace to the deck lid.
