Hey guys, I'm needing a new 6 volt battery for my A and I'm having a little difficulty finding one that will fit properly. Have any of bought one recently from a national chain parts store? If so, which store and which battery did you buy? Did it fit properly, or did you have to modify something? Thanks for your help!

I got my 6v battery from Big R (a farm store) and it fit perfectly. No mods needed. I can't remember the name brand. It has worked flawlessly for two years now.

Bought one from Oreilley's just a couple of months ago. I would have to go out and look to see the numbers but it worked fine and nothing had to be modified except it was a little short and most manufacturers have a spacer thatclips on the bottom which makes it right.

There are three standard sizes of six-volt battery today:
Group 1 ( smallest, fits Model T, Model A, Chevys with the battery under the floor...) Group 2 ( will NOT fit the tray in a T/A Ford, Chevy; used on 1935-'55 MoPar, etc) Group 3 ( Heavy truck, usually wired in series for 12-volt or 24-volt operation ) Then there's the "long skinny battery", as used by Buick, Packard, Caddy in the '40s & early '50s... Group 1 is what you need. If it's a little short, a plywood spacer will take care of that. |

Thanks for all of your responses. They were very informative. I wasn't familiar with the fact that batteries are classified as Group 1, etc. Now I'll at least know what to ask for when I go to the parts store.

I went looking for a 6V battery at Tractor Supply for my FORD 8n, but they were out(group 1), I checked Autozone on my way home and they had one on the shelf, cheaper than TS also.

Sears DieHard Vintage series, Group 1. Plenty of power. a great guarantee and fits well. Available at any Sears store with an auto center.
Most importantly...use correct 6v cables which are 2.0 guage and run an extra ground cable to the transmission or bellhousing. Make certain the connections are clean and tight, then smear with grease over them to prevent corrosion. |

Thanks again for all of your responses. I found a battery that fits perfectly at O'Reilly Auto Parts. I had difficulty finding it online initially because it's listed in the Commercial Battery section. Anyhow, for anyone looking for a battery in the future, it's a Super Start - Commercial Battery, Part Number 1. Yep, you read that right, Part Number 1.
That's undoubtedly a reference to it's Group 1 classification.
