Which Model A for a coast to coast trip?
If you were to set off on the adventure of traveling leisurely from coast to coast in a Model A, which version would you select?
I think my 29 Sport Coupe is a poor choice for various reasons. I’ve only owned roadsters and this Sport Coupe before. Could a wagon be a good choice? Any suggestions? Thanks, Jeff Last edited by Fairview; 04-13-2020 at 06:15 AM. |

Re: Which Model A for a coast to coast trip?
If you have a trunk then the SC would be fine for two people. For more than that I would chose a sedan. Remember people went coast to coast in totally open cars originally. Oh...and pick a good time of year to go-weather wise.

I am wondering if it is even possible to go coast to coast in my no overdrive Town Sedan completely off the interstates.

Re: Which Model A for a coast to coast trip?
I would prefer a coupe or four door sedan because of the bench seat and roll up windows .

I’m thinking for two people, my wife and me. I just finished Tom Cotter’s book, so it has inspired me. The longest trip I’ve done in a Model A is from Virginia to Hershey and back in a 31 roadster 15 years ago.

Re: Which Model A for a coast to coast trip?
I'd use a '30-'31 tudor sedan. Roll-up windows, a fair amount of space to carry things, locking doors, etc. Taller people can modify the front seat support brackets for more leg room. And, most important for me would be the weather protection. Twin sidemounts and a trunk rack would be handy too.

Good Morning...I've driven from Scottsdale to Sierra Vista and back with a side trip to Tombstone and did not use the freeway. We have a Mitchell Overdrive so we could run 55 on the flat stretches...much of the rest of the way between 35 and 40. A great deal of fun and time to look at nature! Ernie in Arizona

My choice would be a tudor, for the reasons Bob/AZ states. A trunk on it would be handy but not critical.

Re: Which Model A for a coast to coast trip?
I know a guy that drove an Open Cap Pickup from Key West Florida to Prudhoe Bay Alaska over 2 summers. The first part was Key West to Montana. The next year was Montana to Prudhoe Bay and back.
This is not the vehicle I would have chosen. The front seat is not very comfortable, not like a Town Sedan. But he made it! http://web.archive.org/web/201609121...hoebay.com:80/

Re: Which Model A for a coast to coast trip?
I would use a TuDor or a 4 door for the extra space, a delivery would be nice for occasional sleeping in the rear. I have 5, a Coupe a CCPU and two AAs as well as a Tudor. The Tudor is the only one I would consider but I would put in a OD before attempting a trip such as coast to coast.

4 door with rear seat taken out, easy to get to stuff and room.

Re: Which Model A for a coast to coast trip?
A few years ago I met a guy that drove a '29 roadster from Oregon to Delaware and back a number of times as a summer trip to visit relatives on the East Coast. He and his wife seemed to take the trip well in stride and regarded it as a adventure. They were about 65-70 years of age and in great shape.

Re: Which Model A for a coast to coast trip?
Here ya go (if you can find one ):
31 Traveler's Wagon, an offshoot of the Special Delivery which was an offshoot of the Station Wagon. Fold-down bed and wash basin, 10 gallon water tank (under roof), storage chest, and roll-up curtains on rear windows. Ford built 10 of them - IIRC, they all went to South America. No known survivors but there are a few replicas around. More realistically, I'd go for an A or AA delivery outfitted with an OD and lower (numerically) rear gears - and maybe some engine mods and camping accessories. |

Don't forget that you can remove the two cushions from the rumble and have a lot of room.

How about a coupe with a trunk? I mean a real trunk and not a box hanging on your rear bumper. Anybody know what percentage of coupes were built with a trunk verses a rumble seat?

https://fordbarn.com/forum/showthread.php?t=123761 https://www.fordbarn.com/forum/showthread.php?t=58682 The typical space in one of these would not be much more than your rumble seat area sans the cushions. The cool thing about one of these is you can add some LED caution lights to the back to help you in more remote roads where the motorists will hopefully see you at a greater distance before they overtake you. Also, the biggest reason why I would not build/buy something unique or special is because after the trip is over, that vehicle is not as versatile. Having something that you would use frequently after you return from your trip makes the Coast to Coast trip still stay fresh as you are telling folks of your adventure very time you are out in the car. Also, I would make your Model-A as bulletproof as possible by limiting the amount of modern modifications that you make. IMO, you don't really need an overdrive transmission. If you slow down your average speed for the entire trip by 5 - 10 mph, it will likely only prolong your trip by about a day from start to finish. With the advent of internet, should you have issues along the way, chances are you(-or Fordbarn members) can find someone local to your break-down that will have parts & facilities to get you up & running. Therefore I would not carry a lot of spare parts that just add weight and slow down your car's performance. Again, the biggest asset I think you will have is you preparing the vehicle yourself where you know what the condition of each component is. If you have familiarity with each component, should something arise along the way, problem solving is much easier. Just my 2 cents....... . |

Re: Which Model A for a coast to coast trip?
Thanks for all the suggestions and advice. I like the idea of using my coupe and increasing the storage in some fashion and the single wheel trailer. For those with a Sport Coupe, is the fabric fairly resilient in rainy weather? The thought of getting all that nice cloth soaking wet kind of gives me the heebie-jeebies.

1961 my buddy and I drove my 29 std coupe from Los Angeles to Grand Rapids, Michigan with all of our college stuff crammed into the trunk. Went thru Yellowstone and over the Bighorn Mts in Montana. Didn't even have a screw driver or plier with us. Had great faith in my little coupe. Still have it too!

As opposed to? Within reason, these cars kept their occupants dry back when new however even a Coupe/Tudor/Fordor is going to have fabric underneath its top material (rubberized leather), so if you get into a monsoon storm where the water can penetrate around the seams, you are going to get rain inside. I don't know whose top you have on which may/may-not be the correct material anyway. Maybe spray some Scotchguard to help seal the inner liner fabric. BTW, I believe Coker sells the tires for these single-wheel trailers as I think it was Cushman scooters that used the same size. The way these trailers attach to a Model-A is to remove the rear bumper clamps and fabricate a connector for the trailer that bolts thru the bumper. Then the trailer arms are heated and bent where they can be connected to the connector with a hinge pin. Personally, I would re-work the trailer frame (-which is 2"x2" thin angle iron typically bolted together) just to be large enough to mount a Model-A era trunk on it, a Yetti cooler (painted the same color as the car), a small cookstove, a few tools along with extra water & gas cans. Something like 4'wide x 3'long. Having the ability to safely carry extra gas & water in the (mid)West probably would be good peace of mind for you. Maybe having an old Coleman cook stove to cook lunch at a roadside park (-boil water to heat prepackaged food) would be a neat experience. As far as lighting goes, I would use repro Model-A tailights with LEDs for your tail/brake/turn lights however I would find some of those small blinking LED caution lights that you see on construction company pick-up trucks mounted in the grille or rear bumper. That way when you are traveling in the more-dangerous areas, you have an alternate safety warning system. |

The best one to take is always the one that will get you there and then home without issues. So what Brent said. Take one you have rebuilt, know, trust and are able to repair as you go along. Do the best job you can preparing for the trip (safety first...good lights/signals, brakes) and then, just go and take it easy along the way so you don't break it. As far as getting wet...we do get wet in our Phaeton but it dries when the rain stops. It's all part of the adventure and in some instances, it is the adventure. I have said to my wife while reminiscing: "Remember the time we got caught in the down-pour in Kentucky without the side curtains installed? We both have a good laugh. Have fun. Be safe! Good Day! Re: Which Model A for a coast to coast trip?
SPORT COUPE! Everyone knows the sport coupe is the most beautiful of the Model A's!
Gives you roll-up windows, but also a rear curtain you can open for hot weather. Remove the rumble seat cushions for luggage space (add a board so the luggage doesn't slide back and block the path of the rumble lid when you open it.) Make sure you have lockable handles on the doors and rumble lid to protect your stuff. Maybe add a small trailer as Brent suggested if you are going to take camping/picnic/cooking gear. Wind wings would reduce the wind buffeting. Sounds like fun. I'm jealous. W. Michael |

Re: Which Model A for a coast to coast trip?
My wife and I have done several trips over here in our Phaeton and we love using unsealed roads. I guess you will be on sealed roads so a closed car should be OK. We used the Phaeton because the small doors are less likely to fall off on corrugations. What ever body style you choose doesn't really matter. Just don't push the car too hard and it will take you to places you can't imagine. Watch the video link above. That German guy explains the bond you will develop with your car very well. It gives you plenty of time to contemplate.
We'd love to do another trip like you are planning.

My experience, which may or may not be relevant: Many moons ago, we had a 30 Sporty for which original top fabric was unobtainium. So we put on a canvas L-B top. I got caught in a downpour at a show. Top didn't leak but it did wick rain around the seams, resulting in some stains. |

Roadster convertable would be my choice. There is a lot of room in the rumble seat that can obviously be covered and the Roaster gives a magnificant view!

I didn't know he drove a "T" also, I'll have to find that book and read it. He has several cars. He even toured to Alaska in his Cobra. I think he has written several books. I have never met him but have read of his exploits several times.

Re: Which Model A for a coast to coast trip?
Fairview,
My wife and I did an 8 week trip around the country in our 28 Tudor some years ago. It was magnificent. We covered 40 states on that trip and now have driven over 100,000 miles on the old girl. Picture in Avitar was taken on that trip in Vermont. You can do it in a totally stock Model A but a Snyder head will get you up Pikes Peak and lower noise and vibration with an overdrive makes a more relaxing trip. My second recommendation is a Fordor. They pack far easier than other models and the bench seat is more comfortable. I love to talk, especially about driving Model A's. I have all the time in the world in my self imposed quarantine. Feel free to send me a PM and give me your e-mail address. We can chat. Richard Anaheim CA |

Re: Which Model A for a coast to coast trip?
We've used a Town Sedan with a good trunk on the back for our longer trips. I wouldn't use anything with side curtains. A group of Model T's have done the coast to coast thing twice now in 10 years. If a T can make it, an A certainly can...

Re: Which Model A for a coast to coast trip?
I have done it in both a town sedan and a coupe. Both had their benefits. The coupe is sportier, but there was a lot less room. The sedan has always been great to travel in. Plenty of room and very comfortable. The coupe goes faster, but the sedan is more comfortable with the extra room. Pros & Cons.

Ford Model K guy (yes K) Dean Yoder does a coast to coast in terms of miles every year in his T. He has over 100,000 miles in Ts.

Why not? He's breaking the law by having an seriously obscured windshield. At the very least a warning ticket.

Re: Which Model A for a coast to coast trip?
A lot of the members in our club that do alot of touring are going for the 4 door Town Sedans. They like the extra leg room and the open area in the rear seat. Say it's the way to go. The only draw back is there heavy so the top speed suffers. 45 Mph is a good speed. JP

The Restorer magazine of vol. seven issue 3, Sept.Oct. 1962 has an amazing article titled "Seven thousand miles to Prove a Point" in which over 20 model A's travel from the East Coast to the West Coast and back in one summer. Pretty amazing!

Re: Which Model A for a coast to coast trip?
I have driven 30,000+ tour miles in the three Tudors I have owned and they worked well, but hands down the best tour car was our slant window Town Sedan. I did not like the look of the sidemount spares, but the trunk on the rear was GREAT.
High compression head is a must, Mitchell OD a plus. High speed ring & pinion if the Mitchell is more than you care to spend.......

Re: Which Model A for a coast to coast trip?
We have made the trip a couple of times in our Victoria, so guess I am partial. I don't use an external trunk, everything fits inside.
Please feel free to contact me with any questions. A's Always Dave |

Re: Which Model A for a coast to coast trip?
Slotblog, I have driven one long trip, Jacksonville FL to Williamsburg MARC meet, in a completely stock Tudor. No problems, but for me the driving experience is better with HC head, overdrive or 3.54 rear axle and rear doors to facilitate loading/unloading. I like to drive 55 mph on long highway trips........to each his own......

Okay, fair enough if you think that. More to the the point of the post, what do you think of Model T guys being able to drive their cars to the Arctic while many, if not most, Model A guys wouldn't dream of driving their cars to a neighboring state 100 miles away?

If you look at that picture and observe where the driver is looking, those stickers aren't in the line of sight.

At least he is not impeding traffic like many Model-A driver's do. The second picture below is a GPS taken at the end on one of his travel days. (Note the stickers on the windshield) Dean's maximum speed would make many Model-A drivers moan to keep up. And, I guess the sticker thing is moot, because when he attended my tour, -and on several others I have been on with him, he has upgraded to the pick-up you see in this picture. I think the Touring was last used when him & George made their loop out to Kanab and back. . . |

Re: Which Model A for a coast to coast trip?
Thanks Brent. Am not familiar with the T, and did not know they could go that fast.
Do not think I would feel comfortable going that fast in a T, do not even like going that fast in an A. But that is my personal comfort zone. |

For once I agree with Brent 100% Model Ts are great cars...with a strong 27hp engine (SCAT crank, Stipe 280, High comp head, Five ball or NH straight carb, Firestone Polonium plugs, etc.) and a high speed rear you can keep up with a stock Model A. Model T has less hp but is a much lighter car. I've done 300 miles in a day in a T myself...too much fun.

Re: Which Model A for a coast to coast trip?
Delivery wouln't have crossed my mind, I like that choice. Sleeping in car is a requirement for all of my vehicle purchases. All of my A's seem to ignore that rule.

Unless you fellars are pretty short, I think y'all would be mighty uncomfortable in a Delivery. Even the 255A Traveler only has around 60" from behind the seats to the rear doors. You would almost need the length of an ambulance to be able to sleep horizontally in one. Then, I'm sure your aching kidneys would keep you from enjoying a good nights rest! Also, unless you have ever ridden in a 130B or 255, they are very limited on visibility. Remember, the doors are the only side windows you have, and you sit rearward of the doors. I think that would not be ideal if you are planning on sightseeing on this trip. Again, the AA Ambulance (-or maybe a bus) may be more ideal. . . . |

Which Model A for a coast to coast trip? Pull a camper!
Sponsored Links (Register now to hide all advertisements)
Sleeping in a Model A...a bit tight. My plan is to travel cross country in a '31 S/W Town Sedan while pulling a small camper? I started on this "clam shell" camper about three years ago and worked on it, off and on, since then. It is equipped with mechanical surge (Model A) brakes, a pull out kitchen from the side door, two fold down bunks, and a small table. I finished it in early March of this year. I wanted a compact tear drop shape but wanted to be able to stand up when I pull my pants on in the morning. The car is modified a bit to handle the extra load. I had a 6500 mile road trip/shake-down run planned to start March 14th but with the pandemic taking hold, I cancelled the trip until it is safe to be on the road again. If I am able to complete the shake-down run successfully this year...then next year: To Alaska! Good Day! Notes: Click on the photos to enlarge. Re: Which Model A for a coast to coast trip?
I have done two coast to coast trips and back, plus a couple trips to Alaska and back. Also lesser trips to Colorado and Texas. I've always done them in a 31 S/W sedan. Lots of room for luggage and everything you need. Most with
my son and wife in the car. |

Re: Which Model A for a coast to coast trip?
Dave in MN, do you have a picture of the inside with the bunks folded down please. Your trailer is very close to what I have had in mind for a while.
We have done a number of outback trips. The shortest was 7,000 miles and the longest was right around the country (same size as your 48). That was nearly 20,000. We towed a camper trailer that weighed in at about a tonne (2,200#) when loaded but I'd like something a bit lighter. I'd be happy to do without some of the luxuries I dragged around the place and that ticks the boxes.. Your trailer reminded me of this Australian van made between the early 50s till about 1970. They rarely come up for sale these days. Have a look at this: https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x2y35ty I am trying without success to upload pictures of a sleeper attached to a Model T we saw on one of our trips. I don't know what I'm doing wrong - any help out there?

Re: Which Model A for a coast to coast trip?
I have a engine I had built in 1998. 100 over. Was a touring engine built before touring engines were the thing. Local builder. I have had a head gasket replaced in Maine and my ring and pinion gear went out in New Brunswick, Canada. Had to ship car home from Maine. Also a wheel bearing in Illinios. worked on it in a parking lot till 11:00 one evening. Got it fixed and continued the next day I travel with 4 to 5 other A's and I have a lot of parts under the seat. Dist, water pump, carb. With the group if I dont have it then some one else has the part.
