My take, for what it's worth, y'all, is the wet cloth (with anything to hold it, be it clothes pins or zip-ties) will work the best. Evaporative cooling is an undeniable effect, and you want to lower the fuel line's temp below gassing/bubbling). Aluminum is a great heat-sink too and could be combined with the wet cloth. But some of the other stuff is like playing "telephone". The truth has been diluted and distorted by being passed down over 85 years. Stick to science, and the "nuts and bolts" will do the magic.

That's the answer. You wrap your wet socks around the fuel line and clamp them with the clothespins, then let evaporative cooling keep the fuel from boiling.

Next thing you know someone will hang a contraption on the car window filled with excelsior and water, and call it air conditioning.

I used a clothes pin in my 29 coupe to hold the choke rod closed in the cold months whenever I was crank starting it, which was most of the time. Just a pull or two with the choke closed, then off came the clothes pin and one more pull started it right up.
