Just looked up a Ford 601 tractor wiring diagram and it uses a 6v starter solenoid with 4 post and it does use a ground to energize. And, the other small terminal is used to provide voltage to the coil when energized. Very interesting, whoever wired this truck must have been a farmer or had a lot of farm tractor knowledge. I learned something on this!

I have almost any original solenoid you need for a 6v positive ground system, including one for your '39 PU. I believe your pickup would have had the "short" version with an exposed push button on the bottom. It would not have been the "tall" version with the brass screw-on cap like the '37's did. I made all of the tooling years ago to rewind coils, convert negative ground to positive ground and essentially rebuild them. When there is a decision on which one you need, email me at [email protected] if interested.

Mr. Tinker,
I apologize, I have not done a good job asking and providing info on this post. That is what happens when you are asking questions for someone else who buys something you thought was something else. Anyhow. I am grateful for all your replies and am confident that we will be running soon. Cheers, CP ps, the guy who converted the 12v solenoid to 6v with 4 posts had the truck running great. The coil needed to be replaced and we installed the new coil backwards, then we thought we needed a new solenoid and screwed that up. Then we realized the solenoid that we fried was custom made. Now we are hopefully back to driving. |
