Clutch pressure plate help

im installing the pressure plate on my 1930 model A engine. freshly turned fly wheel , new clutch disk. After tightening the pressure plate I measured the finger to top of pressure plate. the book says it should be 5/8''... i am measuring 1 and 3/8 inch. what am i doing wrong.

You probably aren't doing anything wrong. You just need to adjust the fingers.

that was very interesting but i dont under stand what is ment by the "cover"
"adjust the nut until you get a distance of 11/16", measured from the top face of the rear of the lever, down onto the cover.

the cover is the outer part of the pressure plate. lay a straight edge across est the outer surface of the pressure plate and measure down from there to the arm where the throw out bearing makes contact. that should be 5/8 or 11/16

Is it possible you have the disk installed backwards?

I believe that the 5/8 distance came from one of the popular repair manuals. Someone else found that the Ford spec was actually 3/4 inch. A little more wouldn't hurt.

A piece of aluminum channel threaded for a bolt and lock nut makes adjusting the fingers easy. I set the bolt for a depth of 5/8" to 11/16", lock the nut and then use a thin feeler, such as .010" to feel each arm for a slight drag when it's properly adjusted.
