Default Anyone Interested In Old Race Cars?

This spring I pulled my old stock car out of the woods. The last time I drove it was 1964 and its been sitting since then. It is a 34 3 window with a 59A flathead. This is a true piece of history as it is just the way it was parked. Most of these cars were built with an arc welder and a torch so they are quite crude by todays standards but are a piece of history. I plan on getting it running and painting it to the way it was when it was raced. Last weekend I went to a car show that advertised they would have vintage stock cars. What they had were reproductions and they spent more on chrome and paint than we spent on complete cars. I was just wondering if anyone else has an interest in real vintage race cars and if there are any sites that have info.

My Dad had a 36 Dodge coupe with a Flathead 6 cyl with a 3 speed that had a bar welded on it so it stayed in 2nd all the time and he was blowing away Flathead Caddys and Fords. I love all those old cars. Take a look at this website for all the old race tracks and amusement parks in Mi. waterwinterwonderland.com Ken

The guys across the street from me drug an old 34 5W coupe in about 2 years ago that had a roll cage made from driveshafts, the rear wheel openings cut up past the body molding lines, floor gone from behind the seat to the rear, doors and deck lid welded shut, and a big auxillary oil tank where the gove box was, just to name a few "modifications". A 59AB with I think a LaSalle transmission and a open shaft banjo rear. Unbelievably it is about ready to go to the paint shop as a re-born street car with the original style drive train back in it. They re-made the body lines by bending thin wall tubing to the right contour and the splitting it length wise.

I have my 36 fast back dirt track car under a shed, it too was retired in 64 when they went to 265 stove bolts here in ET. I have kept a spare body all these years with the thought of reworking it. Still have the 6o over 4" stroke engine stored inside, would be hard pressed to find another Lincoln radiator.

There are some clubs around the country that still race vintage cars.If you google vintage race cars they should come up.Here in Michigan there's
VROA (I believe there are some 30 or 40 members)they hit several of the tracks in the area.I don't think they run flatheads mostly straight 6, Also I understand that there's a club in Canada that's fairly large.I also heard of one in Fla.
Some picture's would be nice.

The 2nd gear lock is an interesting feature. My 34 has a hook welded to the dash to keep it in 2nd. A lot of those old trannys would jump out of gear if you let off for the corner and it could be a real problem getting them back in. Most of the time it was 2nd and foot to the floor but we had one guy that ran a 292 Jimmy 6 and he could pull 3rd on the straights. A friend of mine put a flathead Caddy in a model A but it was so heavy that he broke spindles on the right front and it wasn't really that fast. But those were the days of inovation and guys were trying a lot of things to go faster and handle better.

My 22 car is fairly close to what my 1948 car looked like.
There are several chassis parts on it from the original car.
From the grandstands it looks like the real old thing and that
was what I was trying to achieve but safe and reliable.
We run a 10 race schedule each year and it is real racing,
no parade stuff.

I have manage to save several of those older stock cars, some are rich in history other where just sat nite specials I have a stable of (5) cars in running condition. Two are flatty powered and one of those was a trubute/replica car, built for a customer who entered and raced in the very first NACSAR event in Chlt in 1949.Archie Smith proably one of the last known survivors from that era.I'm located right in the center on NASCAR country here in central NC.I'd suggest a different free site that covers all of the motorsports including the stock cars from the older days of the sport.(www.RacersReunion.com)all for free and tons of vintage photos to view.I'd also suggest picking up a copy of Vintage Oval Track mag from your local news stand plenty of club info in the back pages.Keep us informed of your progress as you proceed.Regards from Arustyracer, a.k.a. Those pictures sure bring back some good memories. Life was a lot more simple then and a lot of fun. When I go to the shop and work on my old car,its like a time machine. I think it even takes away some of the aches and pains,if only in my mind. I would like to say Thank You to the individuals that are making the effort to preserve these old racers so that future generations may observe and enjoy them. I hope they have as much fun seeing them as we did building and racing them.
