Anyone have any luck painting chromed parts? Sand blast to roughen up surfaces? Sand paper? I don't think there's any chemical that will remove chrome- is there? Thanks for any help here!

After sanding you need to use an etch primer..or..2 pack..Etch..or polyurethane primer

You can have them stripped at a chrome shop - usually pretty cheap.

They reverse the cathode and anode which dissolves the plating back into the solution.

I think reverse plating leaves the copper on. At least the axle and split bones I had de-chromed came back with the copper still on, so I'm still gonna have to etch it. Cost me $20NZ (about $15US).

Sandblast it and primer it. Depending on the blast profile, you may be able to epoxy prime followed by color. FYI, you cannot go from etch directly to color.
Usually you need an aggressive blast to roughen up the chrome, don't need to remove it. The aggressive blast usually means you will have to use a surfacer primer to fill and then sand before paint.

I have done this many times over the last 25 or so years.

The main problem with sandblasting chrome prior to painting is that if the chrome is flaking and has rust under it, it will keep flaking after it is painted. Getting it stripped by the plating shop is the best way.

Obviously in any blasting operation you would remove flaking and rust.
