Yesterday I had to go to a business meeting being held about 80 miles north of my house so I thought I'd drive the '39 CS on a road trip "shake down" in preparation for the drive up to Dawsonville, Georgia (aprox. 550 miles) for the Moonshine Festival, etc. The route was 90% highway driving and total millage was just under 160. The '39 did very well and it was an enjoyable ride. I only wish that it didn't have such an affinity for consumption of gasoline... Actually, I topped off the gas tank before I left and she only used a little less then half a tank (that's if you believe the Ford gas gauge). I learned my lesson on last years trip up to the Moonshine Festival in the '39 CS, never let the gas gauge drop below a quarter of a tank or chances are very good that you'll be walkin'. Now I'm even more excited about making the trip, hope to see a lot of you at the festival.

Fall has arrived in Florida, maybe... At least the humidity is way down, the temps are in the mid 80's and the sun is shining, the perfect combination for a drive with the top down...

I've been "goin' topless" in the '39 CS all weekend and enjoying just about every minute of it. She did have a short bout of the dreaded "Vapor Lock" ( I think the corn gas is the crux of the problem) but, after hand chocking the carb a few times to get liquid gas flowing, she fired up and we went on our way...

I discovered that part of the "fuel" problem I was having with the '39 CS were dirty fuel filters... I changed them out and she fired right up... Now I'll just have to see how she does tomorrow after a short drive, to bring her up to temperature, then shut her off and let her sit in the sun for half an hour. If she fires up and gets good fuel flow everything should be fine... I think I'll throw a can of Seafoam in the gas tank for good measure...

Vic,
Did you cut the filter open to see inside? This summer I decided it may be time to put a new filter on my electric back-up pump. Which I did. So I cut the old filter open and it was clean as a whistle (are whistles clean?). If you didn't cut it open, save it for the the Saturday gathering of the Cigar City Flatheads. That project should keep them busy all morning and work up a big appetite for pizza.

That's a good idea John... The filters looked dirty (a cruddy brown color) and the car was experiencing intermittent fuel flow after sitting in the heat for 30 to 60 minutes. When I tried to start her, I had to resort to hand chocking the carb to get enough vacuum to pull liquid fuel through the fuel pump before she would run... By now, you know the Cigar City Flatheads gang needs no excuse for PIZZA See you soon!

Yesterday I put the top up on the '39 CS, in preparation for the trip up to the North Georgia Mountains, as I'm sure cooler temps will prevail. I'm looking forward to the trip but also to getting home so we can get back to work on the Zephyr... Déjà Vu all over again...

Vic, I usually put a cap full of Startron in the tank every time I fill up. The boating guys have used it for years as their boats run and stop for hours at a time and the new gas can strand them with no recourse. It keeps the new gas from fouling up everything - all you need is 1 ounce of the stuff for about 6-8 gallons. I also alternate with a small shot of marvel mystery oil to keep the old seals from drying up. So far, despite all of my other problems, it has worked for me.

Hi Tom, I'll give Startron a try. I installed an AMPO top oiler in the '39CS and I use MMO in it. To bad you can't make it to the Moonshine Festival, hopefully you'll be able to get to the next Florida "Barner's Bash" in 2013. Vic

Hey Vic can I use your lift? I am replacing my clutch & 5 speed transmission on my 1994 F150 today and at 77 I'm not crazy about crawling around on the ground. Only problem is getting the F150 from Missouri to Florida & back today. LoL

Hi Walt, I have to say that the lift was the best investment I've made (other then some of the cars/trucks I bought), when it comes to working in the garage. I'm 62 and I've spent nearly 40 years laying under my vehicles in the driveway, on gravel or dirt when something had to be done. If you can get the truck here, you are welcome to use the lift...

I now remember the Ampco unit but was that for gas or oil?

If I make the Florida Barner's Bash in 2013, I think it will be in the roadster this time (avatar).

Have fun at the Moonshine Festival - I'll be thinking of youse guys!

Vic I Got the Tranny in & all ready to go except I did not buy enough Transmission oil. Thought 1 gal would be enough but it takes 6.8 Qts will have to Finnish it tomorrow. Thanks for the offer on the lift but I would of had to pull it to Florida with my 37 pickup with no AC.

Yesterday the Nostalgia Drags were held in Lakeland, Fl. A bunch of us drove over to watch the fun. I decided to drive the '53 F-100 Panel because I've been working on the '39 CS in preparation for the trip up to the Mountain "Barner's Bash" & Moonshine Festival this Wednesday. Everything was fine for most of the ride but, I was on I-4 just about 15 miles from the Drag Strip when the left side temp gauge (I have two temp gauges in the '53) shot up from 180 to 200 degrees and kept climbing. I pulled of at the next exit and gave Mike a call (in hast to drive the '53 I didn't take any tools... they were all in the '39's trunk).

While waiting for Mike to come to the rescue, I visually checked to see if I could spot a leak. All the hoses were tight and dry... Water was exiting through the overflow...

Mike showed up with a bottle of Stop Leak so I put it in the radiator with some water and we took off to the races. The truck was still running hot, the drivers side was about 20 degrees hotter then the passenger side. Once I parked the truck next to the awning that the guys had set up, we decided that there was some sort of blockage in the radiator or in the block.

I wanted the truck to cool down before we messed with it so… we went up into the grand stands to check out the drags. There were a lot of Flathead powered cars racing, including some of our friends.

After checking out some racing and going through the swap meet, it was time to chow down… Mike was the grill smith, cooking up hot doge and burgers with all the fixin’s.

In addition to the “Drag” cars there were some really cool rides…

We pulled the thermostat housing off the driver’s side to discover that the thermostat was closed and non functioning. I had another thermostat and some gaskets in the glove box (lucky for a change). We borrowed some tools and replaced the thermostat, etc. On the ride home, after about traveling some 20 miles, the left side temp gauge shot right back up over 220 degrees… I pulled off and the next exit, called AAA and took the rest of the ride home in the air-conditioned cab of a flat bed roll back. Now I’ll have to address the ‘53’s problem when I get back from the Mountain “Barner’s Bash” & Moonshine Festival. All in all, it was another weekend of Flathead fun and frustrations’…

Maybe it's me (I still need coffee) but my computer is giving me problems this morning... After I previewed the last post and then posted it, I see duplicate photos and some Type-O’s... Oh well, I hope you enjoyed the photos twice...

A double dose of those pictures is good.
I wonder if you have a lower hose collapsing when the stat is full open. That might cause rapid temp rise on one side.
