Default gleaner combine

Does any one on here have a Gleaner combine? Just a curious question to see if any still exist

I would love to have the engine unit out of one but the machines are too big for my storage building. I have recently communicated with a good friend in Great Bend, KS who told me the combines still exist in the wheat country. He has been looking for a "quick change" engine assembly for me to use as a "run in" stand. Gar Williams

They still build them. I seen a brand new one when I was in North Dakota about a month ago.

There is one still sitting along K-59 Hiway north of Mustochah, Ks with the engine still in it. I had a friend with a 30 coupe that had the Gleaner Model A engine it. He has still passed away don't know what happened to it. I would image his son has it now.

Didn't the gleaner combine engine use a head with a compression ratio over 6 to1 ? If so did the head have special markings? Thanks.

Head was the same as cars generally. Sometimes we have found high compression heads but it is rare. It has been a good source of engines in the flatlands but they are getting hard to find now. A lot of the engines are cracked in the center valve area. They were run hot and cold water poured in to keep harvesting that wheat. I've always said that farmers get a little crazy at harvest time.

Here is one that is sitting by the water tower in Nickerson KS. It is owned by the city and has been pulled in parades.

I see the distributor hole is empty. I wonder what the Gleaner had leading to the ignition switch?

I have two of these motors in the shop right now. They have been sitting half buried in the dirt for about 10 years. First one I opened up #4 Piston was broken at the pin but other than that it looks good. All of the gleaner drive was a pain to get off.

This one isn't complete. They had a control panel on the side of the engine that had the ignition switch, throttle and an ammeter. Also, rather than a distributer, they had a magneto that mounted in the distributer hole.

Last edited by John Stone; 08-26-2012 at 11:58 AM. Reason: added throttle

John,

I do not think it is the "crazy" mode that we are in...it is mostly watching out for your hired help concerning their saftey, trying to keep things in good shape for fear of fires, and trying to stay ahead of the potential bad weather that may ruin ones crop if one is just poking along.

Well yes, I guess we are a little crazy but all we are doing is trying to feed America.

I kinda like the breather cap on that last pic, no crankcase ventilation problems there!

Pluck,
Not meant to be offensive, just poking a little fun. I hauled a lot of wheat out of the fields when I was in high school and college. Great summer job. My grandparents were farmers and 3 uncles were farmers. My dad even did it part time during the time he worked on the railroad. He even owned a Gleaner but it was powered by a Continental engine.

Anyone that doesn't appreciate the great job the farmers do just doesn't understand.

With reference to post #9, here's the coincidence du jour:

Shorpy is a goldmine of Model A pictures...depression, migrating Okies, dealerships, filling stations....

Most of the Gleaner engines that I have seen have the Mallory single or dual point distributors with the centrifugal advance. Occasionally I have seen a magneto used.

Won't be able to make it. We have grand daughter duty so can't leave during the middle of the week for that many days. I know it will be a good time.
