We've all been there, I've got one with that crack in my shop right now (although it only runs along bottom of rail not up into side)it was also a "good" engine. What did your friend pay for it? Maybe the parts will make up for some of the loss.

That sucks that ford guy would do such a thing however they are out there so buyer beware no mater who you buy from. Post this on every web site you can & on facebook so the word gets out. Think I would be making another long trip with motor in tow.

Depends on what you paid. I bought one like that for $150 (no crack though) and it's in my car running, not half bad. Not the best but it got me on the road.

Oh well, you have my sympathy. I am too trusting as well. I have had several hundred transactions on ebay and fordbarn and was only cheated twice. Paypal gave me my money back for the ebay item but on Fordbarn I ended up paying double for 40 drums.
When I was new to this hobby I advertised for 40 drums. I got a response and when they arrived he had removed the hubs. Want the hubs? Oh, pay the same amount again! Crooks like these two are thankfully few and far between. Last edited by mrtexas; 07-01-2012 at 01:05 PM. |

Unfortunately I don't think he posts on the barn but I am sure there are many Calgary area guys that do. I am going to buy it from my friend and just salvage what I can. I am hoping the crank will still be usable and a few of the other parts I can use. Will shop for another motor for my friend.
He does go to the swap meet in Red Deer every year and I do not think he will be very popular by next May. |

Maybe I am just getting to old but I was taught by my parents that dishonesty always comes back to haunt you. The motor was $500. No way were we expecting a rebuilt or anything close to it, just as advertised, a good running motor. A few years ago I shipped a hot tanked and sonofluxed Merc 4" crank to Fordbarner in Australia via a container from LA. The buyer found two cracks my machine shop missed. I sent a refund by paypal the next day and also changed machine shops. Changing shops was the best thing I have done.

$500 for a core is steep, but a core with all the bolt-ons including a 4" crank is not that far out of whack. Even so, the fresh paint job on a core is suspicious up front. There's always a reason why an engine is on the floor. "On the floor, it's a core". I'm a poet.

Well, here in the states, the AL heads and intake and probably AL timing cover, flywheel/clutch assy, over drive tranny, along with the Merc crank (if good) would soften the blow of the cracked block for the price of $500. A running Merc engine/trans in good shape and uncracked might have been too much to expect. The crackeed pan rail could have been missed?? That said, I also hate it when things are miss-represented. Hope it works out OK. I think we have all been down this path especially with flatheads.

This seller knew exactly what he was doing. In some places they call it a "snow job" in others a lot worse.
He prettied up the outside and used his words carefully. He knew full well that gummy grimy mess was full of problems-- seen and unseen. You should identify him publicly (here and elsewhere like the HAMB and ShoeboxFord and other flathead forums). At least you could save some other brother from a similar fate. |

Yeah if it was 500 with trans and heads it wouldnt be so bad and I think he could have missed the pan rail crack but if I missed a crack like that and sold it I'd refund money and try to sell off parts myself, but I guess I must be old fashioned (honest) .

Now that I think about it I have see that engine in person last summer, sitting in the same spot in the first pic. Didn't think much of it was there for a very clean bright green 8ba trans. And yes I did open it when I was there and nothing was done to the inside. Was a 100 bucks and I payed him, I did sell it in the spring to a guy who really needed it bad for a little more but told him I've done nothing to it and it's not rebuilt. Mr. cox had a nice truck too red and black, think it was a merc.

I got hosed on my first flatty, an 8BA. I bought it long distance - my fault - and it was advertized as a running engine. Not likely. It was seized from rusting in one of the cylinders, and the oil had tarred up. Well, I was stuck with it, but lucky for me, at least I got a good engine out of it after having it hot tanked. It just means I paid way too much, but at least it's not a paperweight or a boat anchor.
Ironic thing is, the seller is the one who introduced me to the HAMB (yeah, I know, wrong site) and I feel after learning from others on there and Ford Barn, I know why I should never have bought from him in the first place. You, me, and your friend were schooled, and the tuition was a little steep. |

Nope, will not even talk about it. Seems to think we should have driven 8 hours to get there, taken it apart and drove 8 hours home. Did offer a refund if we took everything back. (engine, OD trans and Heads) Yea right then we would be out just the $600++ for the gas.

I looked at one on C/L awhile back, couldnt get it to turn over with a breaker bar so I took a pass. I can relate to the OP. Bought a 59AB few years ago, wasnt painted or anything but was declared a "Solid runner from a stocker" Well it was a worn out engine, zero compression on 5 of the cylinders. I learned a few things that day.
