1941 Frame repair

My Uncle just gave me a 41 Ford Pickup chassis. He took the pickup body off this chassis and put it onto another frame and engine because of some rust damage to this frame.

I've attached pictures of the rust damage. It's located near the rear passenger side tire, right where the X-Member meets the frame. The outside frame is rusted straight through, and the part of the X-Member is pretty much rotted out.

Looks like Precision Coachworks makes repair patches for this area, so I wanted to ask if anyone had done this repair already. I'll be taking it to some welding shops for pricing, so if anyone can give me an idea of what I should expect to pay for the job I'd appreciate it.

Any other tips are also appreciated.

Nick, If you can't do this type of repair yourself, you would be money ahead, by finding another frame......Ed

Probably should have clarified that this frame is titled, so I'm hoping to avoid switching it out.

Are you Nick Chicago from the old format? Is this frame bent as well as rusted? Where in Chi town are you? Im NW side Devon / Cicero. If youre close by I could take a look at it for you, might be able to tig it up.

I cut sections out of my '41 frame and welded in new sections. I boxed the rear sections of the frame. I made box sections for the areas right behind the "X" member out of 1/8" plate that added tremendous to this section of the frame. It all worked great with no ill effects. I have included pics of the final product.

Wow, great pics from 1950effie - that's a gorgeous frame, it's great to see that much attention to detail done on the undercarraige.

And thanks to Mr42 for the link to the procedure you used. Makes the process much clearer.

My 1939 1/2 ton had the same rot in the same place. I repaired it with my own manufactured patch and 25 years later it still holds. I have to admit however I should have repaired both sides as the repair doesn't flex like the rest of the frame and thus wears tires out a little quicker back rear. Anyway, I'm in the market for a different frame... anyone have one stashed away or have any recommendations on after market stuff?
