Hey!
I need to get a VIN inspection by the DMV to transfer the title into state. Pain in the ass. I've been looking to figure out where the Serial Number could be, but I can't find it no matter how hard I look. I've seen other posts saying "Near the steering box" but I actually don't know what a steering box is. There's a small placard on the firewall (engine side) but I don't see a serial number there, just patent numbers. Is there a way to get to the number without taking half the car apart? |

It should be stamped on top of the left front frame rail somewhere between where the radiator mounts and the aforementioned steering box. That's the thing on the bottom end of the steering column (that has the steering wheel on the top). It can sometimes be hard to find, as it can be painted over, rusted, or even purposely obscured. If you can't find it, use some paint remover to remove the existing paint on the rail and look harder (sometimes looking at an acute angle helps). Do no use an abrasive, as it may make things even worse.
This is assuming you are referring to a USA built car as things are different "down under". |

On top of frame rail near where steering box/gear bolts to frame. Also under body on same left frame rail one near center and the other back where spring crossmember rivets on. All on top of left frame rail rail left or right hand drive.

Scroll down to the bottom to see a drawing of where it should be, there is also a table of serial numbers so you can get an idea of what your looking for. |

This all helps. Looks like I'm going to be doing some careful scrubbing with paint stripper in the future. There's probably a dozen layers of paint.

And the number on the frame was the same number that's on the title? That's like a good scratch ticket!
