Default Identity an old sedan, not Model A

I have been trying to ID the old sedan in the photos.
In the summer of 1939 my mother and 4 girlfriends went on a road trip from Springfield, Illinois to the 1939 fair in San Francisco. They went all over the western part of the US, including Mt. Rushmore, Yellowstone, Crater Lake and
down to Los Angeles after the fair. Then back to Springfield.
I recently came across photos, postcards and letters from their trip.
I regret never having asked her about their adventures.
Anyhow, can one of you car enthusiasts help determine what the car was?

If they had gone in '37, they might have met my Mom. She was 16 and took the train from Du Quoin, IL to Yellowstone and worked the summer in the park photo shop. I still have her Yellowstone scrapbook.

Probably took the Lincoln Highway to San Francisco and Route 66 home from LA.

Thanks to all of you who identified the car. And to Mercman for the original ad.

Mom is the second from the left, sitting on the running board with the cool round sunglasses!

Very common sight on the streets of Cape Town South Africa when I was a boy . After school I spent time at Camps Bay garage run by Mr de Beer and Wally his assistant . Known as Chevrolet Master so saw many under repair . The troublesome " Knee Action" front suspensions were often replaced by a straight axle and regular springs also Buicks had them .

John in rain today Suffolk County England .

I thought the 36 Chevrolet was the last one with knees.
Mine rolled of the grease rack and out into the street. The only damage was the rear bumper bolts sheared off and the knee front end was about 2” lower. It still drove fine.
