Sorry for long explanation thought every detail would help. (Ford dealer mechanic helping me). While driving car heard front wheel squeaking noise. Got under car and found wheel cylinder very hot. Ordered new cylinders and shoes and replaced. Bled system 3-4 times and removed all air. Pedal felt a little soft and low. After short drive still no difference. Jacked up all 4 wheels, adjusted top and bottom of each wheel for a good drag. Pedal still felt little soft and low. Then noticed both new cylinders leaking. Any thoughts what we did wrong?

A few years ago there were a lot of aftermarket wheel cylinders that were improperly manufactured - causing lots of problems. It was discussed on Fordbarn.

Among other issues, the holes were drilled in the wrong spot and would not allow the fluid to easily (or not at all) return.

it could have a been a misdiagnosis i suppose...but
maybe you mean how could one take the time trouble and expense to go about doing something the right way, or at least THINK they did, and then found that they had to do it all over again...and again...and yet maybe a third time? ...is that what you mean? uh ya...i can understand that. as it happens to me all the time. in fact, i've found it to be quite common and more the rule than the exception. ![]() i've been into the left rear hub about four or five times now on my '41. first it was the e-brake cable, then the backing plate, THEN it was the spindle needed shimming, and then back again to the e-brake cable. ...seems it never ends. ![]() in fact i won't, in the least bit, be surprised if when out on my next test drive, the hubcap falls off and before i can turn around and go get it, i will have the privilege of watching it being run over by an 18-wheeler. |

I believe this discussion on the "new" wheel cylinders was had on a previous thread and I can't remember IF it was the cups that were different OR the hole for the fluid was in a slightly different location and this was causing cylinders to leak IF the cups got pushed back too far??? Yes the new cups are shorter they measure .200 compared to the US which are .360. The tapered area of the short cup is .130 wide the US cup is .230 wide. Another difference the shorter cups have a series of of ribs around that shorter .170 tapered area this makes the sealing surface almost non existent. There's also another problem I'm experiencing with the wheel cylinders they do not retract correctly compared to the original US wheel cylinders. This creates a dragging brake shoe issue I'm going to check and see what NAPA has will give an update once i have them in hand. This year makes it 50 years I've been driving the roadster updating parts and having an issue sure sucks. I'm going to rebuild the original wheel cylinders to get things back to normal. Thanks to everyone for your input. I'm off to NAPA Ronnieroadster"
