Default 1st to 2nd shifting three on the tree 1961 f100

Ford F100 t86 three on the tree. Was shifting into gear ok. before clutch work. Now as I go from 1st to 2nd. The first time moved into 2nd it doesn't lock in if you move it back to 3rd or out of the gate then back it goes into 2nd and catch the gear.

Is this something adjustment to the gear rods at the transmission ears would fix?

It might. Disconnect the rod for 2nd/3rd and shift the lever at the trans manually by hand into each gear and then compare fit up of the rod to arm with the column selections fully in for each test fit. If the rod is short or long, it should become apparent. Bushings can wear and get loose too so check that as well.
