Where do you get this book? I am hoping to install a 39 transmission in my Woody. I got the transmission on a trip through California at a Long Beach swap about 26 years ago from Meets in SoCal. It was in the box until this week. It had the aluminum adapter attached and some brackets also attached. Bert's has the adapter made recently and I was sure that I would need it but I was lucky when I opened the box. I want to look through the Van Pelt book to get familiar with what I am getting into.
Does anyone have any experience with this project that they could share with me? Thanks in advance. Vic |

Maybe more knowledge in the early V8 subforum?

I just installed a 39 transmission with Zephyr gears rebuilt by Zaninno. I used the Clingman adapter kit. This is mated to a Burt’s engine with V-8 clutch and downdraft Holly 84 carb. I am not a mechanic but am just doing this while I wait. Wish I had someone nearby who knows what to do.
I am unsure how to install the aftermarket brake pedal return spring with the adapter on the transmission. There seems to be interference. The body is not yet on the frame. |

This book is the "go to" for anything involving V8 and Model B transmissions. A very useful book just to read. Bert's www.modelastore.com manufactures the kits to install Model B and V8 transmissions behind Model A or B or Burtz engine. 1. They sell the one for V8 transmissions made by Cling's since Cling stopped making them. 2. The B engine adapter is the one previously made by AC&R before they closed down. Both kits include the brackets to mount pedals, E brake, wishbone and etc. 3. Rear bearing retainer 78-7085 with ears shortened is needed for Model B or V8 transmission. 4. If you install a Mitchell OD behind the V8 transmission you need a special shift linkage for the OD to adapt to V8 transmission. Last edited by Benson; 04-10-2026 at 11:22 AM. |

Thanks all for your help. Van Pelt is closed on Friday. I will get the book from Bert's together with other stuff. It was less expensive to use my available 39 trans and then have a long wait for a new Mitchell trans. I hope that the VP book has all the information that I need.

There are only a very few details that aren't in his manual. The one thing I can relate is the normal gap between the blocker rings and the synchronizer teeth. It should be approximately the thickness of a US quarter. Most every thing else is in there. Anything else can be answered here in the early V8 section. Mac checks it along with the rest of us so don't be surprised if he would be the one to respond. He is a very good source for both new and good used parts.
The 1939 version was the last major update for the type so it would need the associated parts. It has the late style synchronizer assembly and shift fork plus the double detent shift tower used up into the early F1 pickups years. The cars changed to side shift in 1940 but a lot of the guts interchange. Mac lists all the gears by part number and what they all fit with so the manual is invaluable for that reason alone.
