Back in the late 60's we were allowed to use calculators for homework but weren't allowed to bring calculators to tests in Engineering at Mizzou. We had to bring slide rules. Accuracy with a slide rule (as I recall) was three significant digits. Many students at that time didn't own calculators; they were pretty pricey. Today most phones will do everything a $300 calculator would do back then. And (if they still make them) a $4 calculator will also.
