I have an i-phone. Works great for calling people or texting my kids. I only visit the 'Barn on my laptop and even on my 15" screen the pictures are too small until Pete or others blow them up. I also remember to thank him far more often than not. Like others, I'm not sure why all our photos do not come up large like on the other auto forum I frequent. Then perhaps we'd all be happy and get along

Brent,
Folks,
Pictures on forums? I for sure don't have the answers. I do remember years ago when my computer was slow the thumbnails seemed bothersome to me to view then enlarge and go back to the thread. I chose to use a hosting site to hold my enlarged sized pictures and then insert a link in the thread to the larger than thumbnail pictures. I still do this.
Not sure this is good for all systems or not. I don't use my phone to view forums. I use a laptop. I am old! Anyway its hard for the older pups to learn all the new tricks that happen very fast these days! By the way thats a good shot of GB with a woodie! Ok its big enough don't enlarge it again! Just having fun guys.
Let me know if my pictures are too big?
Very interesting. But I will probably keep doing larger pictures till Ryan or someone says stop. Come to think of it I kind of look for Pete to enlarge some thumbnails. Maybe I am just getting lazy too?
I just completed looking at the 1942 super Deluxe thread with lots of thumbnails. I enlarged most of them and I lived through it.
I like pictures of any size to see the work folks are putting into these cars and trucks!
Amazing threads here!
Regards,
Chris and Cheryl

While I am not a frequent poster. I am a daily browser.
I think Pete’s & others gestures are very helpful
They were extremely convenient when I was traveling in New Zealand last month.
Very helpful. Keep up the small kindnesses!

To those who disagree with OP and insist they cannot enlarge the thumbnails, where exactly do you think the photo reposters get those large size photos to repost?

In any case yes it’s unnecessary and mildly irritating, and does ruin the thread when viewed on a phone, since the image will stick out past the edge of the right margin and make you have to zoom way in to see the text.

I come on here to this site on my home computer before work on a used car lot. Much of my day at work on the car lot is spent planning what I'll do next to my Mercury or what I'm presently doing to my Mercury. I'm flattered that someone does their skill to pictures, because I grew up building a black and white darkroom in places I have lived in although on one site I visit--a person actually takes the time to colorize my pictures. He does a good job even though I love black and white. Kind of funny. My question today is here is my end cap and across from the oil port is a big hollow space and does this space contain the famous felt wick?

Forgive me for not having read all the texts but my take is that the software that's used for this forum is ancient and it goes back to the the days when memory was expensive. If one has a ton of large format images, it takes a lot of money to store that data on a site that can be accessed by the public. As members of the forum, we're allowed a certain amount of data storage. If you want to post large pictures, you don't download the image, you download the ADDRESS of where your image lies. Over the years, there have been some wonderful threads with beautiful large images and in some cases, the poster of those images for one reason or another has abandoned those imagesly (possibly by not making payments for their storage) and the forum then will only show the address for the images USED TO BE. Pete, God bless him, has been keeping those big beautiful images out there for us all to enjoy. If for some reason he decides to no longer participate, we'll all be left hanging. Enjoy them while we can.

I'm with Brent. its not hard to click on pic to make it big. reposting it big is unnecessary.

Fred, Yes, that is where the oil wick is located. Be careful. Some say drilling a hole there is not a good idea.

I think your confusing the actual forums with "Photo Hosting" outfits like PhotoBucket. They're the ones that charged to store your pictures and causes them to disappear if you don't pay the bill. Back in the day, the problem was bandwidth more so than data storage. When most forum access was over "dial-up" lines, it could take literally minutes to download a large image; that's why they came up with "thumbnails". They loaded relatively quickly and if you found them of interest, you could "click" on them and get the large image, even though it took a while. With the coming of internet access, bandwidth concerns evaporated as the speed difference is so great.

The problem is the software, not hardware. The vBulletin package that "The Ford Barn" runs on is absolutely ancient, designed back in the day of limited disk storage and dial-up access. As such it has many built in limitations. Ryan's other form, the "H.A.M.B." converted to a more modern platform several years ago, and over there, they encourage you to post all photos full size. I believe plans were to upgrade the "Ford Barn" software as well, but feedback from the users caused that idea to die on the vine.

It's really a matter of personal choice. I find the redundant images annoying, because if they were of interest to me, I would have already enlarged them which makes them redundant and a waste of my time. Others disagree, which is their right. Even I would disagree with the forum banning such activity, so I guess it's our cross to bear.

It’s not storage or “memory”. It’s bandwidth. This software was designed for slow dialup connections, and thumbnails load faster.

Of course, that makes it far superior to modern web software, which is horribly slow in comparison because even with modern broadband connections, loading dozens of full size images takes a while. I say this as a professional software developer.

The reasons for having a thumbnail image that you can click on to expand were correct and wise. The thumbnails work as designed, you can easily get to the full size image, and if you can’t figure it out, everyone else reading the thread shouldn’t have to be punished with spammy image replies because you “need” someone to click on the thumbnail for you.

I'm not criticizing any individual, but I always just click on the first thumbnail. That allows me to see the image full size and then scroll through the rest of the images using the next button. It's not difficult. But when I then carry on down the thread I have to scroll past all the full size images I have already looked at. Not a biggie, but a little annoying. I use a full size desktop PC. I don't know if using other devices makes a difference. I know how to post the full size pics and often do it myself in the initial post if it is my post.
Again, no criticism, but learning to click on the first thumbnail is a skill most people could achieve.
Mart.
